busyish weekend

Friday night (really Saturday morning) we were patching servers again. I biked to work Friday afternoon, came home, and biked to work again after midnight, making for 2 commutes within 24 hours.

When I got home (about 07:30) I found anniemal about to leave for the hippy farm with her OkCupid buddy. May 1 (4th, actually) is a cross-quarter day, Beltane, and these are major observances at the farm. I wouldn't have known where they were going if I'd gotten back an hour later. I would have noticed the absence of the van. The weather's been wet for days, and it must have been the same at the farm.

Saturday was also my brother's birthday, and the big surprise was dinner out tonight at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse. My brother is a big eater, and this place is a meat-lover's dream. They have roving "gauchos" who come by with various cuts of meat and they'll slice off portions for you. Beef is the focus, but there's also some lamb, pork, chicken, and fish (salmon and swordfish). There's sauces and cheeses, and a lovely salad bar. There are things a vegetarian can eat, but it's really a feast of meats. I don't think anyone really had room for dessert afterward, but there was a large slice of tiramisu with a candle on it - reputedly strongly coffee flavored (not that I like tiramisu to begin with).

[It struck me as typical American excess. It encouraged over-eating and over-consumption. There must be tons of food wasted every day. The beautiful vegetables on the salad bar had me wondering how much not-visually-perfect food was passed over.]

We went back to their house after, and played with the Wii a bit. That was also new for me. I did pretty well at (100-pin?) bowling and archery, and very poorly at Frisbee golf.

[Another out-of-whack American extreme - how hard would it be to bike with a disc to a nearby park with a disc-golf course? Or make your own with several neighbors' adjacent yards? Getting up and moving is better than sitting (although Wii bowling can be done to a high score on the couch), but it's not the load-bearing exercise of real bowling. The skill of positioning a target on a screen is not the same as aiming a real arrow while fighting the tension of the bowstring and feeling the wind you need to correct for.]

On the way home I stopped at a grocery store for more OJ (only 6 cans of the high-pulp house brand, on sale; 3rd store I've bought out), frozen pizza (on sale), cookie dough (on sale, plus coupons), and Redd's Wicked Apple (on sale). I have to hide the Redd's (and anything else with alcohol) because Annie will drink it much faster than I do. I like to have one after work, so a 12-pack is generally a 2-week supply for me; 2-3 days for her. There was also Redd's Wicked Black Cherry on sale, so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't like it. There is the black-cherry flavor, but there's some other taste there that doesn't appeal. I may adapt to it over a 12 pack, but I doubt I'll buy it again. I didn't see any breakfast cereal on sale that appealed to me, which was unfortunate since I rarely go out in the car and have so much carrying capacity. I'm not apt to buy 2 12-packs on the bike and take them 2+ miles uphill. There's a closer Safeway that is mostly downhill on the return, but it doesn't stock Redd's Wicked.

Monday 23:01

I just found yesterday's can of Redd's Wicked Black Cherry. I didn't finish it yesterday; that speaks volumes. I rarely forget to finish food or beverage. (Decide to, yes; forget to, no.)
