Once upon a time there was no Internet. (Really - I was there!) You might be listening to old-time radio and you'd hear a reference to something like Spudnuts, and you'd just have to wonder what they were, because they're probably not mentioned in that set of encyclopedias you have on the bookshelf. (Nope, checked; they're not in mine.) You could call the public library (when it's open tomorrow), but anyone old enough to remember them has probably retired. If they really were addictively good, it's hard to see how they could have disappeared from our culinary landscape (and memory - maybe my hometown didn't have a franchise?).
