no storm

Last night I thought it would be snowing when I left for work today.
This morning I thought it would be raining when I left for work.
When I left for work, the roads were dry.
The snow forecast has been a moving target, drifting later and later in the day as the day goes by.

This is really complicating a freecycle pickup I'm trying to do.

A lot of people are working from home today.

[13:00] Most of the others in my group who did come in today have left. One is going to Ohio for a 4-day weekend (Monday holiday), taking a 70-mile longer route farther north hoping to avoid the snow. (So far, so good on the weather RADAR.) Another simply left early. We had a horrendous storm a couple of years ago that was bad mainly because they let everyone go home early (mid-afternoon) after the snow started and caused an early rush-hour that prevented the plows and chemicals from getting around to clear the roads. Minor accidents caused major blockages and people took hours to get home. (Ran out of gas, did not have warm clothing, etc.) I had no problems getting home when I left work later that evening.

[19:00] Still no snow here at my office. DC was in a dry pocket, with the storm to the west, southwest, south, southeast, east, and northeast. Freecycle pickup should be straightforward.

It never did snow here today. (The RADAR looked pretty bad all day though from Fredericksburg to Richmond, and a broad swath west and east of that area.

Tonight I picked up a Technics SL-PC20 5-disc CD player. The remote for it was not included. (But hey, it was free.) Maybe some multi-function remote I've already got will control it. It's top loading. Disadvantages: (1) it must be on top of your component stack, (2) with enough clearance to open the lid (i.e. probably not in a cabinet). Advantages: (1) simpler mechanism than cartridge or slide-out-tray loading, so (2) no problems of discs trapped inside the player if it malfunctions. (I've had to take Mom's CD-player apart to rescue imprisoned discs.)

I haven't tried it yet to see whether it works, but the display looks reasonable when it powers up.
