It's official: Prey is now on Ubuntu and Debian
http://preyproject.com/blog/2011/04/its-official-prey-is-now-on-ubuntuSoftware that works on multiple OSs may make a difference if you have a dual-boot machine - it would be nice to be able to use the same application on Linux and Windows, for example, and configure them the same way, since you're tracking the same piece of hardware.
Software that's been adopted into Ubuntu's packaging scheme is a mixed bonus - (after I upgrade to the next Ubuntu release) I won't have to do anything difficult to get it and install it, but there will probably be some lag to having the latest version.
But having something slightly old is far better than not having anything installed and active. Without some software reporting home, you have very little chance of recovering a stolen laptop.
