Thunderstorms came through this afternoon and the power went out around 15:30. The traffic signal at our corner is out too. I've just gone out and put the traffic cones they left here
a few weeks ago at all the lanes at the intersection, and more people are stopping at the intersection. They left us one STOP sign too, and I've stuck that on a cone facing the direction with the most blow-through offenders. We have collisions at this corner even when the signals are working, so anything that gets more people to treat a dead signal as a 4-way stop will help.
A neighbor called the utility company and was told that the outages are widespread. The first estimate was that our power would be restored by 20:00, but he got a later estimate that was completely open-ended. They're calling in crews from other areas. (Of course, if you can see this, our power has come back on.)[21:00] The power's back.[Jul 30] Many people were without power for days, some until Thursday or Friday (by which time there had been another storm, but nowhere near as bad). Maryland was hit much worse than Virginia, so we might have been the southern edge of the damage. Repair crews came in from as far away as Ohio and NJ.
