Bill Holbrook
Bill HolbrookI think we had 18"-19" (45cm) of new snow on the deck at 10:00 this morning. It took me almost 2 hours to shovel a path across the deck, one down the driveway to the sidewalk, down the sidewalks on the front and side of the house, make a couple of cuts through the plow berms. This is just a cut the width of the snow shovel, not my regular full sidewalk width (and just our sidewalk, not the 2 neighbors that I usually do as well once I get going), and half of the (double-wide) driveway. It's still coming down, and there was enough new snow to shovel any spot again after 15 minutes. A couple of guys (whom I didn't recognize) were digging next door (on the less-busy street), but when I got down my driveway I saw that they'd just been digging out a car, not the sidewalk. I did make the snow shallower in a little bit of the yard for the dog. He doesn't like snow, but he doesn't have much choice. (There's nothing like needing to squat when it's already up past your belly.)
We had about
6" (15cm) of snow last Saturday, and 3" (8cm) Tuesday night. (
anniemal got outside earlier than I did Wednesday and she says it was twice that.) Plus with the snow back in December, many of the area's snow-removal budgets were spent before this weekend's storm. The heaviest snowfall was expected last night, but our storm watch goes to 22:00 tonight. Predictions were 16"-24" (40-60cm), possibly more.
There's very little motor traffic out. A few people walked by, and a few people were out playing. We live on a major corner. The (narrower and) busier street is a state highway, and 4 plow trucks (actually those monster gravel-hauling trucks, loaded with sand/salt) came rolling through in a little convoy. A smaller, county dump truck came plowing up the cross street. I think a lot of people may have to watch "
The Game" at home this year, because it might be hard to get to any parties or sports bars around here tomorrow.
