Pennsic: Sunday evening

Aug 05, 2007 21:36

It's been raining off and on much of the afternoon. It looks like it's ready to rain all night. Maybe fewer people will be out carousing and it will be quieter. I certainly expect to get to bed earlier tonight. I was falling asleep in classes today. Today's classes were mostly not what I had originally planned, between being too full or running much longer than scheduled: 10:00, Modern Materials / Period Shoes (I would have gotten more out of that if I'd been to the class on making lasts yesterday (when we were late for the Coursing of the Hounds), but it's offered again Tuesday); 11:00, Making the Medieval Book (this guy makes his own parchment from animal hides, makes glues, makes inks and colors from plants and minerals, does illuminations, etc); 13:00, Byzantine Icons, 15:00, Muslems under Norman Rule (Sicily after the Norman invasion); and then choir rehearsal.

anniemal left early enough this morning to get to a 09:00 class - Viking Dogs Then and Now. Unfortunately the class turned out to be short, and digressed into people talking about their dogs. She did get to some of the other classes I had been considering though - Cotehardie (Gothic Fitted Dress) Fitting Demo; Sleeve Fitting for the Cotehardie; Underwear I - Survey of Medieval Undies; Underwear II - Documentable Details; and Trim: What is it, Where Did it Come From, How to Use it. I'm glad she's getting up and out and getting to classes this year. It's a shame to come all this way and not partake. (She got to classes some last year too.)

Pennsic Choir rehearsal went well, and we had another rehearsal tonight with the small group singing Morley madrigals in the middle of the program. We mostly sound pretty good, but we have some rough spots.

You may recall that I took two chain-mail classes here last year. I looked through the class list, and this year there's only 1 chain-mail class, and it's for children, and limited to 12 people. It was obvious last year that there was enough demand for 5 or 6 classes. I guess there must not have been anyone who volunteered to teach them this year (and it is all volunteer, people sharing their knowledge (and some of it pretty arcane)).

22:09 - It's raining quite hard now. I hear distant guitars, but not much drumming. I can't hear the highway noise, and the truckers aren't blowing their horns. (They probably don't want to be driving now anyway, if they have any choice.)
