Effectively immediately, all Arlington County/APS parks, fields, playgrounds, restrooms, tracks, dog parks and courts are closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Signs will be posted at all affected locations. Park visitors are asked to adhere to all closure notices and current social distancing recommendations.
Trails and community gardens are also closed to groups. Please exercise and garden alone.
I'm glad the trails are still open to individuals. We still need to get exercise. Some cyclists may still be commuting. (I would be!)
Monday 17:46APS Closed for the Remainder of Academic Year
Virginia's Governor Ralph Northam announced this afternoon that all public schools in the Commonwealth will remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
Effective Tuesday (March 24), ART [Arlington Regional(?) Transit] bus riders will enter and exit all buses using the rear doors only; ART will also be suspending fare collection.
Keeping the riders away from the drivers, I guess. I think Metro reported a driver testing positive last week. (While passengers are obviously suspect, I wonder how thoroughly they checked the driver's family and friends?) The cross-street at our corner is an ART route, but the service isn't that frequent, and it doesn't run weekends. And if it has reduced service the way METRO has, I doubt there's much useful left.
Both these items in my email had links, but they're tracking links. (Long, ugly, and invasive.)
Wednesday 12:11POSTPONED: 7th (Almost) Annual Boundary Stone Bike Ride
Dear Boundary Stone Bike Riders,
We write to you with the probably-not-unexpected news that we must postpone the 2020 Boundary Stone Bike Ride, originally scheduled for April 25, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The wellbeing of our community is of the utmost importance to us - and the National Park Service revoked our permit.
We are exploring fall dates and will let you know as soon as it is time to re-save the date for the ride!
In the meantime, we hope you are - and remain - healthy and active. If you just cannot wait to check out the stones, here is the
route from our last ride. Please have fun exploring, but practice safe social distancing recommended by public health officials.
Finally, we we encourage you to
support local businesses and nonprofits if you are able during this difficult time!
I went on about a quarter of this ride in 2015. My company picnic was the same day, and the route went past my house, so I dropped out to go to the picnic.

Boundary Stone Ride (and Company Picnic) Wednesday 17:08Three Arlington Metro Stations to Close
Starting Thursday, March 26, Metro will CLOSE 17 stations in an effort to conserve critical resources and protect the health and safety of Metro employees and the public. These closures include the Clarendon, Virginia Square and East Falls Church stations, and will impact several ART routes.
The ART bus on our cross street goes to the East Falls Church station.Executive Order Fifty-Three is now in effect in Virginia, meaning non-essential businesses are closed and gatherings >10 people are banned
Wednesday 19:09At approximately 8:00 PM TONIGHT (3/25), The District of Columbia will be issuing an emergency alert - requiring ALL DC non-essential businesses to close and asking residents to STAY HOME. Due to cell tower placement, some Arlington residents may receive this alert. This DC Order does NOT APPLY to Arlington.
Please note that the Arlington is following Virginia Governor Ralph Northam's statewide order to protect the health and safety of Virginians and reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.
- Closure of certain non-essential businesses
- Bans all gatherings of more than 10 people
- Closes all K-12 schools for the remainder of the academic year
- Urges all Virginians to avoid non-essential travel outside the home, if and when possible
Thursday 17:28After receiving additional guidance from the state, Arlington’s farmers markets can re-open this weekend in a new format - preordered sales only.
Metro has closed 19 stations and is for ESSENTIAL TRIPS ONLY
Just as I am convinced that bike commuting instead of transit has kept me away from colds and flus, I'm pretty sure that if I had been taking Metro last month I would have been exposed to this coronavirus. (Of course, it's still possible I have been exposed, and maybe I'm infected but asymptomatic - so far.)
