short retirement

We got an email today about the death of someone who had worked here 40+ years. No details. She retired 4 months ago. I wonder whether she knew then that she was ill, and didn't have much time?

I suppose that if I loved my job (or my co-workers?), I would work as long as I could. But for most people, I can't imagine many things sadder than retiring and not being able to enjoy it - for lack of funds, lack of health, or lack of time. Lack of friends could be on there too, since if you don't die early, you're going to be watching your contemporaries die off. I tend to have friends who are younger than I (so they shouldn't all be dieing before I). And I tend to be a loner. (If I set off on a bike tour, I don't expect to find many who will want to join me.)

If I knew I didn't have much time left, I don't think I would tell many people. If my condition weren't evident, I would share it with very few.I got another email from a co-worker asking whether we are taking a collection for another co-worker's daughter's funeral. I didn't know the daughter had died; I didn't know the daughter was that ill.
