Meh, Malaysian Airlines is really not having a good year. Two downed aircraft in a year. I feel really sorry for the latest one, the people involved and their families. It really sounds likely that Russia supplied some very high-grade anti-air stuff to the Ukrainian Rebels and they accidentally misused it, although, of course, that's not fully confirmed. If it wasn't for the tragedy of the losses involved, it could even be funny, in some respects. I can just imagine somebody (probably a grunt) on the ground launching a super over-powered technical missile with only limited knowledge of what it is or does (it makes the evil aircraft go boom) and the missile streaking off and taking out the passenger liner instead. Stuff like that happens all too much in wars, from what I've gathered through reading and listening to histories. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how it develops and whether that's what really happened.
