Pure Altruism

I'm over halfway through Final Fantasy 7 now. It had been quite a while since I had played through it and I had only done so once. I find myself appreciating it a lot more this time around. The story is much more complex and satisfying than I remembered. It's not that I didn't like it before, but I had just thought of it as just another FF game without too much to set it apart. After this I either will play Chrono Cross for the first time or FF 8 for the second time.

I've decided to post two topics this time, one regarding Christian doctrine and one not. I'm not sure if anyone has particularly strong feelings about this topic so I'm not sure if it will take off like the last one. Also, don't neglect the previous discussion. As long as everyone still has things to say, I would like to keep it going as long as possible.

What is everyone's opinion on pure altruism? It's another of those things like free will that I want to believe in but have a hard time with. Can anyone really do something for someone else without any regard for themselves? In every case I can think of the giver always has another motive whether it be guilt, the desire to feel like they are better than the other person, expecting something in return, praise, or just to make themselves feel like they have done a good deed. Is this really an issue of whether people are inherently good or not? Are these ulterior motives actually just a perk of doing good deeds and not the primary end?

I still need to do some research on the next topic but hope to have it up tonight or tomorrow. Just so you guys can think about it before hand, the topic is regarding salvation. Do we choose God or does God choose us?
