I can't stop listening to Us by Regina Spektor. If it sounds familiar it's because it's from 500 Days of Summer which you must see ASAP!

I can't relate to this song in any way, but I love how she sings with such passion. I often think that if I had a talent for singing I would want to sound like Natalie Merchant from 10,000 Maniacs or Stevie Nicks Read more... )

I totally know that last thing you said... I always wonder what part of a song people listen to because for the longest time I assumed they heard what I ehard, but that's really not the case.
My housemate doesn't listen to lyrics and instead likes the beat and the tune. I sent one song to a friend and he said he liked the bass part, which I hadn't even noticed. I'm a soprano and I used to play violin, which are both fairly tuneful/main melody instruments, and I realize I go for songs I can sing to and always listen to the lyrics. My friend who plays the drums will sing the drum part if he decides to sing along, most of the time.
I think the part of the music you listen to also contributes to what kind of music you listen to (even if you don't know it!) Like I said, I like tuneful things that might be disgustingly sappy but I like the tune so I'll like the song... then I have a friend who is studying classical guitar and his favourite songs are guitar-based, but then also songs with interesting chords or musical arrangement that he knows about because he's studied it but is completely lost on me.
If you're stuck on sounding like a dude, put in some favourite male bands where the guy actually sings really high, like Queen or Prince or even sometimes the Beatles! Haha it closer...

After I wrote this & after I read this comment I've tried to listen to other aspects of a song but I find it hard. So weird. It's like my brain has been trained to only listen to music one way.
I enjoyed your comment, it made me think!
