I can't stop listening to
Us by Regina Spektor. If it sounds familiar it's because it's from 500 Days of Summer which you must see ASAP!
I can't relate to this song in any way, but I love how she sings with such passion. I often think that if I had a talent for singing I would want to sound like
Natalie Merchant from 10,000 Maniacs or
Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. I don't listen to a lot of female artists. I'm not sure why, & I've wondered for a long time why this is. One reason I can think of is because many of the bands I grew up listening to - Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, Great Big Sea - are all male. Also, I like rock music & most rock bands have all male members. Think of big ones off the top of your head: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, U2, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana - are all male. Last year when Rolling Stone magazine did an issue about 'Greatest Guitar Players' all the artists they chose were all male. I know the annoyance of 'rock & roll is dominated by men' is an old tirade but there is truth to it.
Personally, if you look at
my music charts, a female artsist comes in at #7 with Fleetwood Mac which is a band of both males & females. After that, Carly Simon appears at #32, Madonna at #37, The Mamas & The Papas at #43, 10,000 Maniacs at #47 & the list goes on. Of my top 50 artists listened to overall, only 5 are female or have female members in the band. I have nothing against women, obviously, but why do I feel like I identify with more with music sung by men? I know I'm not the only female whose favourite musical act is an all-male band.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm not really out to prove anything except maybe say that on nights when I just want to dance around & sing into my hairbrush it's not as fun when your voice comes out like a dude's. I'm totally open to new music, but I always gravitate towards male artists, although not conciously.
In the end, I think what type of music you listen to defines who you are. I know that's an incredibly broad statement but music (to me at least) is so much more than lyrics, tempo, notes, etc. Music can make or break a moment, or you can hear a song & instantly recall a memory. Discovering a new album at a certain time in your life will always remind you of that time when you play it. Music can get you through a hard time in life, or it can add to the good times. I am always so fascinated with why someone wrote a song or what is about or why it was recorded in a certain spot or why they used the guitar, etc etc. I recently had a conversation with a friend that admitted she didn't listen to lyrics or care what a song is really about. I guess music can affect everyone differently which is the beauty of its art: it means something different to everyone.
Alright now I'm rambling but phew, it was good to write!!!
Cheers.
