He was clumsy and sometimes pretty slow to catch on to things, but the one thing Yosuke Hanamura could do was protect. He’d do anything to protect his friends and his family. But more importantly, the love of his life.
Everything happened all too fast when he pushed Botan out of the way of the speeding car. It was a red light damn it and for once, he was paying attention. No way, no way in hell he was going to let her get hurt. Unlike all the other times when he would help her dodge danger, this one cost him his life.
He lay on the concrete, stained red from his blood. Asshole had to be going at least thirty over the speed limit and didn’t even stop. Fuck, everything hurt and his vision was blurring. The one thing he could feel was the rain falling from the sky… no, it wasn’t raining that day. The sun was out and the sky was as blue as it could ever be. Yosuke blinked a couple of times to notice that Botan was holding his hand, crying over him, saying… something. Damn it, he couldn’t hear her.
All right… concentrate on her voice. You’re still here… for now.
“-ke… Yosuke please!” He could hear the frantic panic in her voice. But there was something different. Despite her words and how the fell from her lips, there was one understanding between them that didn’t need to be said…
He wasn’t going to make it.
“Hey…” He word choked out, sputtering up blood. Hold it together, Hanamura.
“Why? Why did you do that?”
Well that was a stupid question… to him anyway. Why wouldn’t he have done that? To protect the one he loves, of course. After Saki, he wasn’t going to make the same mistake. No chance in hell.
Brown eyes trying to focus looked her over. Outside of the couple of scratches from her skin skidding across the concrete, she was fine.
She’s all right…. Thank goodness she’s all right…
When he didn’t answer, she panicked, her tears falling harder.
“Don’t cry Botan…”
“Don’t cry? Don’t cry?! Tell me you didn’t just say that just now!”
Haha, he pissed her off… again. A half chuckle fell from his lips as his free hand reached up to cup her cheek.
“Fine… then do something for me.”
“What…?”
“Smile… for me…”
“Wh-”
Botan, needless to say, was confused by his words. Smile? At a time like this? This was another joke of his. He really didn’t mean to say that. Yosuke was being delirious.
“One last time… You know I’m not going to m-”
“Don’t say that!”
But they knew… they both knew.
But she had to hope. She just had to. Even with the sirens in the background drawing closer, she had to hope.
“I’ll always be here…”
“No! And I know what you mean… I need you here, physically, Yosuke… After everything, everything! I have… no one left.”
“That’s not true.”
The hand resting on her cheek left to touch her stomach.
“You’re not alone. You have him to take care of. And I’ll continue to stand beside you, like I always have…”
“Yosuke…”
Another good point of Yosuke was his words. Botan could be in a flying rage fit and he’ll do something to make her laugh or something meaningful that she’d never forget. All she could do was cry harder. He was going to leave… he knew this, she knew this, and nothing could change that.
“But what about…”
“Right… ha… check the basement cabinet, left hand side… Your ring is there.”
For a moment, he closed his eyes. She called out to him and he opened them slowly.
“Yosuke…”
“Hm?”
“I do…”
If this were normal circumstances, he definitely would have questioned what she meant, but for once, Yosuke caught on, understood.
A smile formed on his lips.
“I do.”
Botan leaned down to kiss him. She had lost a lot of people in her life and now she was losing the love of her life.
What had she done to deserve this?
Life faded from him slowly as his lips stopped moving and his hand slipped from her growing stomach. There, she pulled back and smiled, tears streaming down harder than before.
“I love you, Yosuke Hanamura.”
She scooped him into her arms to hold him for the last time. It didn’t matter that her clothes would be stained red. Why would she care about such a thing now? All she could was cry and keep him close until the EMTs would have to take him away. They would pronounce him dead, but she knew in her heart that he would always be alive, with her, forever.
