Do Fictional People See Reality?

Once upon a time, a bunch of fictional people walked into a science lab, where there were experiments on regrowing starfish arms and lizard tails.

What did they see in the lab?  Walls covered in cabinets?  Tables covered in weird experimetns?  I have so little clue, I can't even ask google.
