Word Wednesday - Where in the World

World-building: when science fiction writers create a new world or culture, they have to create a seamless web of customs, cultures, clothing, geography, languages, maybe politics and war.

My short story - which I expect to take about 2K - doesn’t need very very much custom or language, and certainly no politics or war, but geography and culture will play a part, and clothing for a bit, but it needs geography.  Lots and lots of geography.

The main plot centers on finding water in the well - and the well near the city is fouled.  Clearly,  they live in a desert, if water is that important.  But is that true?  Pre-plumbing, wells are more important that people today realize…

Have a list of places where water in the well is so important.

Desert
Tundra
Swamp
Fens (why do fens come in plural?)
Prairie
Badlands
Drylands
Island
Ship on the ocean
Overcrowded city

And to think this all started as  a cure for writer's block...

writing, short story
