Was there a better verb you could use?

Finished writing 'Cloak and Dagger'.  Swapped all these 'was' phrases for better verbs.


Food was compatible with exotic off-world biology.  Food suited exotic off-world biology.

Their mere existence was a political statement. = Their mere existence made a political statement.

it was inevitable that some youngsters would pair off = some youngsters inevitably paired off

There was no way to know = He’d never know.

He was happy with his work, of course. = He enjoyed his work, of course.

I was just going to look for you = Glad I found you

before she was famous = before she grew famous

That was the truth slipping out by accident = That truth slipped out by accident

It was a small source of tension, but Boris was tense enough already =
This small source of tension shouldn’t matter, but Boris felt tense enough already

The words and voice were neutral, but tightened muscles around his eyes held darker emotions
= Neutral words and voice contradicted darker emotions in the tightened muscles round his eyes.
