I think I really am an emotional masochist. Before Matt and I came up with that because we both watch anime and movies that really aren't happy (Elfen Lied). I think it's more than that though. Happiness is not actually part of my goals, and I can't even imagine myself in that state. What I do search for though is understanding, but not understanding of people that are happy. If you think about it, things that you're content with, don't cause you to change. It may reinforce a behavior that is already there, but doesn't really cause any major change in people. Plus, if someones content, it's usually pretty easy to understand why, but they don't really need anyone to, because they're already happy with what's going on.
On the other hand, negative things really seem to be what it is that shapes people. If you're not happy about what's going on, you're probably going to change, or may do something out of the ordinary, sometimes drastically so. This is when people actually need to be understood and I think the only way to do that is if you've experienced something similar.
Then there's other things, like if you're content with things, you're less likely to open you're mind to other things that you haven't thought about before. There's the saying "ignorance is bliss", but maybe it goes the other way as well. If you're content with your surroundings, you have no reason to change, no reason to try and understand things that are different, and no reason to really open yourself up to anything different.
Now that I think about it, I know I wouldn't want to be around someone who's hyper and happy about everything, because they wouldn't be able to understand a lot of things. I don't just mean about me either. There's also understanding other people.
Oh yeah, then there the level you can tolerate. If you've dealt with a lot, you're probably more likely to be able to deal with new worse things than others. For a physical analogy, if you fight for a living or something and had multiple bones broken, you're probably more likely to be able to deal with pain when you're severely injured and do something that may be required to save your life. If at the very least suffering prepares you for something else than might happen later.
Maybe this is why I tend to like the dark sometimes "evil" characters.
