I remember now.
Recently I found the English Cardcaptors on Youtube, and watched the show for the first time in about seven years. I now remember why I used to think the original Japanese version was weird. I'm just used to it now, but thinking about it, it's a little messed up.
In Cardcaptors, you had Sakura, who had a crush on her older brother's cute friend. Yukito/Julian entertains Sakura but doesn't seem very serious. Then in the Japanese Cardcaptor Sakura, we see them going on dates and spending time alone. A high school student and a friggen nine-year-old.
Speaking of Yukito, in the Japanese version he's the object of affection for not one, but two boys (Syaoran and Toya). I'm okay with homosexuality, but come on, it's a kids show.
In Cardcaptor Sakura, Tomoyo clearly loves Sakura, and not in the platonic way. That's why she records all of those videos and dresses her up in cute outfits. In Cardcaptors she's presumeably a film enthusiast or an aspiring journalist, turning the videos into a personal project. I think I prefer the latter.
Of course what was the most disturbing of all, and indeed, probably one of the most disturbing things I've seen in an anime, is the relationship between one of Sakura's friends and Mr. Terada, their teacher. Someone probably in his late twenties or early thirties having a love affair with a fourth grader. The worst thing about it is that no one seems to notice or care.
So whine all you want about how much stuff was cut out, CCS fans, but I have to say I totally approve what Nelvana did for the show.
