You see, it's going to be a very long post. A very long post about this weekend, this funeral and a whole bunch of internal actual emotion stuff that I've been happily crushing for quite some time
( Read more... )
glad the funeral got you thinking rather than badness, my grandad would never talk about what he did in the war either, and would never tell me what the medals were for, though i think he was proud to have them.
Funerals are never good. We all miss those we love that we have lost, and I think that is a large part of why funerals have more of a tendancy towards the religious - even those of little faith like to be able to think that somewhere their loved ones are happy
( ... )
It is a hard thing and... well, there's not much to say really other than it's awful to lose someone and from what you've said, I get the impression that 'disappointed' would not ever have been a word he associated with you.
far away again...

Hiya Becky, it's Rachel. Haven't gotten myself a livejournal yet - and I stress yet - as I'm sure it will happen soon. Just a quick note to say that it was wonderful to see you this weekend, and like we said, you're welcome to stay with us at anytime (but come to California...it's more interesting than New Jersey, trust me). Oh, and about Granddad being mentioned in the dispatches. I started writing to him and Grandma fairly frequently and I asked him about the war. While he never really talked about it much in person, he seemed to open up in letters so I learned a bit about what he did. He got the mentions on D Day + 3 in North West Europe, but I'm not sure what for. That he never told me. Maybe you could ask Grandma? Anyway, this is turning into an email more than a note, so I'll stop now, but I'll talk to you soon. - Lots of Love, Rachel.
