Pear-a-palooza

The people that mow our grass for us came and asked Mom if she wanted some pears since their pear trees had a larger than normal crop this year. Mom said yes, expecting a small bag. They brought two, massive, construction sized buckets filled with about 90 pounds of pears.

So we've been peeling, chopping, and canning those suckers into pear butter, preserved pears, pear jelly, etc. All of the pears are between the size of a racquetball and a baseball, and are a total pain in the ass to peel. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't a million degrees outside. You keep running pots all day long in the kitchen, it heats up the whole darn house!

We're three days in and have 1/3 of the pears processed. We've got about 2 gallons (7.6 liters) of pear butter and 6 gallons (22.7 liters) of preserved pears. (The pic above is the latest batch.)

The nice thing though is that, when you do it yourself, you can totally control what spices and how much sugar goes into each batch.

Still this is starting to remind me of our pecan tree's harvest from last year. It took us 2 months, but we ended up with 93lbs of pecans once processed, most of which are still hanging out in our big freezer.
