Helinikon Air Force Base Helliniko (called Helinikon to us americans) is was a Greek Air Force Base. In the 80s - part of it was sectioned off to be an American AFB. That, there, is where my dad was stationed, and right where we lived (well, there wasn't base housing, we lived in Athens suburbs) for almost two years. Helliniko is six miles outside of Athens, and is being used in the Olympic Games as a Sports Complex. It's a small base compared to anything here in the States, but it was a lot of land and a decent airport (which appears to still be open). So now it's a big sports complex and fields. And after the Olympics, they plan to make it into the biggest park in Europe. By park, I think they meant FLOWERS. :-D
That is where we'd go to the "Crossroads" - a little cafe-ish place with THE BEST grilled cheese sandwiches ever. And we'd go to the Youth Center there on base. Aaah, the memories. The only sad thing is... when I go back to visit, it won't look the same! But that'd be so cool if there was a park there. From a website --->After the Olympic Games, the Helliniko Olympic Complex will be converted into a much-needed metropolitan park for the congested Greek capital. Additionally, a convention centre is being constructed on the same site.
wow, I wish I was in Athens. well, not DURING the Games, but after. I have GOT to go when this park is up. Maybe I'll find Tigger's reincarnation back in his birth country. hehehe.
