BioWare Staff Are People Too

"This might seem a bit of an odd thing to post, but I think it's something we should all bear in mind, especially with ME3 just round the corner. Thankfully, this community is almost always civil, and a generally nice place to hang out - however, anyone who frequents the BioWare Social Network will know the sort of things people can spout when they type before they think.

What am I referring to? This: http://www.destructoid.com/bioware-writer-s-vagina-versus-the-internet-222206.phtml

To sum it up, BioWare writer Jennifer Hepler (Dragon Age, The Old Republic) has come under a pretty appalling attack over Twitter, among other places. To call these insults vile would be an understatement. Her crime? Suggesting that games feature an option to allow players to skip combat. As she points out - plenty of people skip dialogue and cutscenes to get to the shooty shooty, so why not allow the reverse? (makes ME3's Action, RPG & Story Modes seem very relevent now)

No sooner did she join Twitter, than she was seemingly being blamed for all the world's ills, with some forum posts even declaring that her committing suicide would be "a good thing" for games. I won't elaborate on some of the more offensive remarks (not that it really gets more offensive than wanting her dead), but suffice is to say that the stereotype of the angry basement dwelling nerd won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Long story short, both she and a fellow BioWare employee hit back at the offending remarks, and now one of the people that insulted her is complaining that he was upset by BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn's response.

Why am I posting this? Well, we're all attached to the characters of Mass Effect to varying degrees, and we've all probably seen at least one strongly worded discussion about characters/romances/plots/etc. But we have to remember that the people that made this game, and those that make every other game out there, are still regular people. So even if your favourite character meets a laughable death, acts completely out of character, or betrays Shepard to hang with the Reapers - when all's said and done, it's just a video game, and the people that made it don't deserve to be treated badly because we disagree with some of the choices they've made.

It feels a little silly saying this to a community that is comparitively level-headed - but all the same, here's hoping we keep it that way and never turn on those that brought us a franchise we all love."
