So things here are getting seriously interesting. My luck is so bad sometimes it's incredible.
For our Corals class we had to do projects in groups of four - an observational study ending with a presentation.
All three of my group members came down with dengue fever by the end of the study - meaning I had to do most of the analysis alone, and present our data by myself. Man - o - man. There is an outbreak of dengue on the island. It's seriousness is on a level with the flu. You get it, feel crappy for a week to a month, and then get better. Once you get it you are immune to that strain but mroe succeptible to other strains and to dengue hemmorhagic fever (DHF). So normal dengue fever is only dangerous for elderly and people with weakened immune systems - though the symptoms are more severe in children and young adults. DHF however, causes your blood vessels to lead - causing bleeding from the nose, and gums, as well as internal bleeding, and can be fatal. If DHF shows up at all on the island - we are going to be immediately evacuated back to the US. So right now - I guess we are just waiting. More people are getting it every day - but everyone wants to stay anyway. I guess we are just currently waiting to see if DHF shows up or not.
We have a meeting now, and I'll know more later - if I find out anything interesting, I'll make sure to post about it...
