The music was deafeningly loud, and they hadn’t even gone inside the house yet. Students surrounded it like moths to a booze-fueled flame, and it looked absolutely terrifying to Jared. He knew he could count on Sophia to keep him sane and safe, but Chad was thriving on the atmosphere. Jared could tell that his friend loved this life and these sorts of wild people.

“Well, are we gonna go in, or are we just going to watch while everyone else has a life?” Sophia asked. Chad was already dancing his way towards the house before Sophia had finished her sentence. “Guess that answers that.” She grabbed Jared’s hand and tugged him along.

“Promise to stay close to me,” Jared pleaded with her.

“Jared, you’re like Bambi.”

“Huh?”

“I’m like the mother helping you walk. Now, c’mon and stand on your own legs. They’re just a bunch of teenagers.”

“Exactly,” Jared huffed, but he allowed her to continue to pull him.

Jared lost track of time as well as his friends pretty quickly. He was pretty sure he had seen Chad move upstairs with at least two girls, and frankly, that was more than he cared to know. The music was being controlled by someone who should know better than to demo her own stuff at a house party; Hillary’s parents owned the house, and though he wanted to feel sorry for her, the truth was that the music did suck and she should have stuck with general stuff.

Thankfully, no one was jumping off the roof and into the pool, and the breakables weren’t being used for target practice. The whole thing was considerably tame; no one was puking in any of the many bathrooms, no sex was being openly displayed-though intense making out was encouraged-and no police were present. Aside from the deafening music, it was an average high school party.

Jared was just gaining some liquid courage when there was a loud, joyous hollering from outside. The kids who weren’t failing to keep their eyes open or making out all turned their attention to the sound.

A group of boys stormed into the living room with a bunch of equipment. Their leader, a kid with longer dark brown hair and a sturdy build, came barreling in last. “Don’t worry, kids, now the real party’ll start!” he exclaimed in a whiskey-thick voice. He booted Hillary off the sound system with a peck on the check and love tap on her bum, which she laughed off in good humour. By then, a few other kids were helping with the set-up. A skinny boy, taller than the others, with pale skin, caught Jared’s attention briefly; he had seen the boy around school and he definitely liked what he saw. The kid was a natural beauty, but Jared had never had classes with him and their social groups weren’t the same.

It didn’t take the boys long to set up the equipment and their instruments before the music was back on; it seemed, if possible, louder than before. It was a Southern brand of rock music that Jared enjoyed a lot more than what had been playing before.

The boys put on an amazing show, drawing back some of the drunker party-goers who had wandered off as the evening progressed. Jared listened and watched them intently. The boy who had caught Jared’s attention was playing the guitar and looking like he was having a lot of fun; he had a content smile on his face as his fingers moved over the instrument.

Jared had been so focused on the band playing that he hadn’t noticed Sophia moving along to stand beside him. “They’re pretty good, huh?”

“They’re amazing,” Jared exclaimed happily, the wide grin on his face showing off his dimples.

“So how’s my Bambi doing, having fun?”

“Think the alcohol might’ve helped a little.”

“Well, not with the walking, but I guess it’ll do.” She grinned up at him and lightly punched his arm.

Their attention was drawn back to the band as the lead singer stood back and allowed the skinny boy Jared had been watching to step forward. His music wasn’t as upbeat as the rest had been, but a few kids were going insane near the front when he started. He must have done this before at other parties.

The boy’s smile was a little more uneasy, but he still appeared to be enjoying himself. He grinned back at his friends and the lead singer smacked him on the back for encouragement. The music started up again in earnest as the boy came to the mic.

He licked his full lips before he started singing. Soulful, soft, a hint of rasp within it; it was a beautiful voice. Jared gasped in disbelief. It couldn’t be this easy. After months of wondering, here was the answer Jared had wanted: a face to the voice.

“Jared, Jared, what is it?” Sophia asked, noticing her friend’s reaction.

“That’s the voice.” Jared still couldn’t wrap his head around it. How was it possible?

“What?”

“That’s the voice I’ve been talking about!” He looked down at her and she mirrored his disbelieving expression.

“Jensen?”

“How do you know him?” Jared’s attention latched onto Sophia desperately.

“He’s friends with my friend Danneel, I’ve hung out with them a couple of times.” Sophia was still trying to get a grip on this new development in her friend’s obsession.

“And he’s in the choir?”

“Yeah, they all are.”

Jared excused Sophia’s lack of understanding of the rivalry between the choir and the band, considering she wasn’t in either.

“Full name, now,” Jared ordered.

“I don’t think this is a good idea, I think we should see what Chad says.” She looked around desperately for the spiky-haired boy.

“You and I both know that Chad is just going to slap me on the ass and hand me a condom. Now gimme his full name.” His voice had a dangerous edge to it.

“Ackles. Jensen Ackles.”

“Gay, straight, bi?”

“Unspecified, I think.”

He rolled the name in his head for a few moments. It fit with the voice. “Okay.” He started to move closer to where the group was playing, but before he could get far, Sophia had grabbed his arm.

“Wait, Jared. Wait! Do you even have a plan? I mean, you can’t just go up to him and say you’ve been crushing on his voice for the past few months.”

Shit. She had a point. “What am I supposed to do, then?”

Jared spent a few minutes listening to Sophia rationalize things for him; he hated it, but the girl had a point. He hadn’t really thought about what he would say to Jensen, only that he really, really wanted to say something to him. Maybe compliment him on his voice, but he probably already knew that.

Within those few minutes with Sophia, any confidence he had built up came crashing down.

“Jared, I’m just trying to make sure you don’t get hurt.”

“By destroying any hope to begin with?”

“I’m trying to keep your feet on the ground. You’re acting like you’re planning your wedding already and you haven’t even talked to him yet!”

“Fine! Apparently, I’m acting really stupid, so I should just crawl in a hole and die.”

“Jared, I didn’t mean that!” But it was too late; Jared had taken off, away from Jensen singing and away from Sophia.

Jared didn’t know how long he sat in the empty bedroom. He could hear the band playing, the music pausing as they took breaks. He knew he was acting incredibly immature, but it was annoying being that close and not having the support he’d thought he had. It wasn’t all bad, though; it gave him more time to decide how to talk to Jensen.

He still couldn’t believe that he had found him so easily. Now he just needed to get over the fact that he was in band, and Jensen was in choir; that he had been crushing on the boy’s voice, and that he hadn’t talked to him yet. Chad was right, he was pathetic.

He had just resigned to a steady stream of moping when the bedroom door opened.

“Shit. Sorry, didn’t know anyone was in here,” a voice that Jared was beginning to know pretty well declared.

“No, it’s okay. Don’t worry about it.” Jared looked at Jensen in the doorway. The boy had broken a sweat while playing and his face had a glow to it.

“Jared, right? You’re in band,” Jensen stated, looking at him closely as he tried to place Jared.

“Uh, yeah.”

“Yeah, your friend Sophia mentioned you.” He would have to kill her. That would be the only solution to this embarrassment: brutal homicide. “Said you really liked how we played.” Maybe he wouldn’t kill her just yet.

“Uh...yeah, you guys were really great. Didn’t expect you vocal boys knew your way around instruments,” Jared teased naturally. Jensen laughed softly at the joke. Was he actually attempting to flirt with the boy?

“Oh, we know our way around certain instruments. Nothing like you guys, though.” Was Jensen flirting back, or did he always make innuendos? Jared was baffled by the boy, and Jensen seemed to notice. He stood in the doorway for few seconds looking around awkwardly before he focused his gaze back on Jared.

“Do you mind if I share your hideout with you? I’m a little beat and I think Chris is going to try and make me sing for the whole night.”

“Yeah, of course.” Jared was a little tempted to admit that he could listen to Jensen singing all the time, but didn’t.

“Thank God!” he cheered as he stepped into the room and closed the door. “So, what’s your reasoning for hiding out?”

“Uh, immaturity?”

“Good answer.” Jensen and Jared smiled at each other.

“This isn’t really my scene,” Jared said. “I’m only here because a friend asked me to come.” But he was beyond ecstatic that he had. Jensen was more beautiful up close than Jared had initially thought; his pale skin had freckles. Jared was starting to agree with Sophia; he had been thinking about Jensen’s voice for too long. A boy he had just met shouldn’t have this much power over him. But when Jared looked into his eyes, he couldn’t even form a proper sentence. Jensen’s eyes were the perfect mixture of green and gold, and it was mesmerizing to watch.

They spent the rest of the night talking. Jared discovered that Jensen was actually a shy and private person outside of singing, which, in Jared’s mind, just made him adorable. Their families had similar structures-both boys had an older brother and a younger sister-only Jensen was a grade ahead of him.

Despite being shy and private, Jensen was funny, and clever. He enjoyed sports and, all in all, seemed like a really nice guy. Jared’s crush kept getting bigger the more he talked to Jensen, and he was beyond excited when Jensen said he wanted to hang out some other time. Jared couldn’t believe his luck!

They separated when it got late; Jared took off to look for Sophia and Chad. Chad had somehow lost all his clothes except for his boxers, and was painted from head to toe in some mixture of neon green and blood purple. Jared really didn’t want to know how Chad had managed it, but at least he kept things interesting. He couldn’t find Sophia, so he sent her a text. She responded that she had shared a cab with a few other girls and she’d see them later, leaving Jared to stumble-walk Chad home.
