It was nothing compared to the hatred between the rugby players and the footballers, or between the Sharks and the Jets, but it was there nonetheless. There was never any open confrontation, but the members of the band and the members of the choir at Parker Hodge Hall really disliked each other. It may have had something to do with budgets and competitions, but since the school’s founding, the two had never gotten along. Not even the teachers responsible for organizing the groups liked each other.
Because none of the students were snapping at each other or breaking into choreographed dances down the hallways, it was never a problem.
This was all according to Jared’s older brother, Jeff, who had been part of the Parker Hodge Hall Band during his attendance there before leaving the legacy to Jared. And Jared was willing to live by the laws of high school.
That was until Jared heard the star of the choir singing; the star in his opinion, at least. Jared had been helping Mr. Kripke, the crazy Biology teacher, move some textbooks when they had passed the choir room. It had taken him a few seconds to figure out what he was hearing. It was soft, soulful, with a hint of rasp. It was male, and it was one of the most beautiful sounds Jared had ever heard. Once he finished helping Kripke, he had booked it back to the choir room before Kripke could try and talk to him about his theories on lycanthropy.
He had been relieved to find that whoever he had heard singing before was still there. And then it came crashing down: Before he could get over the hiccup that was their unspoken rivalry and gather enough courage to see who the voice belonged to, his friends had come down the hallway and dragged him away.
Since then, Jared had attempted to find the owner of the mysterious voice. No matter what he did, what he listened too, how often he practiced his saxophone, he couldn’t get that choir voice out of his head. If he wanted to be honest with himself, which of course he didn’t; he would say he was rather obsessed with finding out whose the mysterious voice was. Instead, he preferred to stay in the world of denial.
Needless to say, the search wasn’t going so well; the conflict between the two groups managed to keep Jared from discovering the voice’s owner. As a result, he was left to pine at a distance and drive his friends insane with his pouting. Both campaigns seemed successful, if the way that Sophia rolled her eyes and Chad twirled his plastic butter knife were anything to go by.
“That’s it!” Chad finally snapped. Jared hardly registered his outburst; Chad was so melodramatic most of the time, Jared had stopped being surprised by him. “Seriously, Jay, how can you be this hung up over a voice? A voice? Have some self-respect and at least fall for his ass first!”
“As apocalyptic as it is to say, I think Chad might actually be right,” Sophia agreed with extreme difficulty.
“Was that really so hard?” Chad asked.
“I had to swallow vomit three times before I could get the words out.” Jared snorted his amusement at Chad’s grossed-out expression.
“Moving on! The point is, if I have to stare at your pouting face for one more second, my balls are going to fall off and I’ll be almost as pathetic as you.”
“Wow, it’s nice to know I have such a loving support system,” Jared grumbled at his two best friends, resting his head on the lunch table.
“It’s because we love you that we’re worried.” Sophia placated him softly. “And don’t listen to Chad, his balls fell off long before you came out of the closet.” That managed to get a smile back on Jared’s face, at least, and miraculously kept Chad quiet. “But Jared, you have to admit that being this obsessed over a voice is a little weird.”
“Well you didn’t hear him,” Jared shot back defensively.
“True, but it’s been a couple of months now, and no offense, but this crush is clearly not going anywhere.”
The pout returned to Jared’s face.
“You need to get laid, my friend, many times and by as many different people as possible.”
Sophia wrinkled her nose in disgust at Chad’s statement. “Yes, because that will solve all his problems,” she argued.
“It works for me.” He shrugged. “Okay fine, he doesn’t have to have sex. He has the right to say no and all that shit. But I heard there’s a party going on this weekend, and I think we should go.”
Jared was about to protest; he had no interest in spending his time with a bunch of drunk students. He was awkward and clumsy under the best of circumstances and he didn’t need alcohol to help him stumble around.
“I know what you’re going to say, my socially awkward giant,” Chad interrupted his train of thought. “But I heard that some of the choir minions will be at the party too. Maybe this is the chance you need to find that voice.”
“I thought we were trying to get him away from his obsession?” Sophia shot back. Chad just rolled his squinty eyes at her.
“We are, but I’m a selfish bastard and I really want to go to the party. Jared may be content with blue ball syndrome, but I’m not.”
“You’re disgusting.”
“True, and I embrace it. Makes my life wrinkle-free. So, we’re going, right?” Chad looked at Jared, expecting his best friend to become his wing man for the event.
“If Sophia goes, I’ll go.”
“Soph, don’t make me beg.”
“Tempting, but I think your voice is giving me a headache, so I’m just going to say yes now and put us all out of our misery.”
Chad let out a holler of joy, drawing the attention of the other students in the cafeteria.
Jared wasn’t thinking about the unspoken rivalry, or being socially awkward at the party. The voice had taken over his mind yet again, and he only hoped he’d be able to put a face to it by the end of the weekend.
