change of mind

This evening Mother& I sat enchanted under the gilded encompassment of the Opera Garnier with its red velvet lining and intimate seating. The performance, a ballet, was La Petit Danseuse, a fictional but fact-based story woven around Degas' Little Dancer of 14 Years& a tribute to the artist himself. The costumes& details of the stars were meticulously recreated from Degas' paintings& sketches, but the lighting& colors brought the ballet to life& became the paintings from Musee D'Orsay.

For so long I have thought that my interest in fashion was because the clothing that I love is not being made, but the ballet showed me something else. Yes, it isn't being made, but the point isn't that I want to be the one in the designer's chair, creatign these things. I am so envious of artists who were able to paint and create before the 20th century, before clothing was "manufactured"& mass-produced& before style was so casual. Had I been in Degas' situation, I would have painted until my fingers bled. Dancers, high-society... Hell, even the prostitutes were fascinating& lot of work was put into their clothing. So my point is... I don't care if I can wear the clothing, I just want to be able to paint it being worn, to paint the portraits of elegance and angst, of dedication and character. Strange dreams. I'll just have to make the clothing myself and paint it.

I'm not going back to russia...
