Hello flist! Remember me. I've been rubbish as per usual. My New Year's resolution is to be a better LJer though, so please stick with me and see how I do. To help you forgive me, I've created a massive 2008 overview to entertain you all. Enjoy.
It's time for the first annual 2008 random awards! Cheer people! A ridiculous amount of time has gone into this massive pic and video spam. So give it a read and tell me where you agree/disagree. Created for
picspammy Best New Female Character
Donna Noble
The universe has been waiting for me
God, where to begin? Donna was wonderful, which was a complete suprise to me. I had very low expectations given my dislike for Catherine Tate's comedy show and my apathy towards the character in Runaway Bride. As a very casual Doctor Who watcher (i.e. I love David Tennant) I was completely shocked at the depth of my love for Donna Noble. She was funny, she was fierce, she was heartbreakingly insecure and she was the perfect counterpoint for the Doctor. Her ending was, in my opinion, the worst thing Doctor Who has ever done to a character (more about that later). My brother thinks Doomsday is sadder, but my heart breaks ten times more for Donna Noble, supertemp.
Best Returning Female Character:
Runner up: Blair Wardorf
Joint Winners: Pam Beesly and Miranda Bailey
I asked Tom and Pete to come early so we could play a prank on Jim at lunch. Pretty awesome, right? I think they're into the idea. They're probably thinking, "that Pam Beesly, she's the coolest sister-in-law on the planet. She's the best! The absolute best."
Andrew: I’m the guy who dies in a block of cement to try to impress a girl. I’m like Han Solo...in Star Wars...he was encased in carbonite. Oh God, my poor, poor parents, how will they face going to the funeral?
Bailey: Okay Andrew, you’re going to make a lot of mistakes in your life, but mistakes, they’re just pieces. Like this is the foolish piece, but y’know, it’s just a piece. You need to be proud of the whole picture; the whole picture defines you, not just this one piece.
Andrew moans in pain
Bailey: Andrew, hey hey, listen to me, Han Solo was not a loser. Han Solo got encased in carbonite and that was a big mess, but that’s not what he’s remembered for. He’s remembered as the guy who made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs , braved the sub zero temperatures of Planet Hath in order to save someone he cared about from the big ugly Wumpa. He’s remembered as the guy who swooped down at the last minute to blast Darth Vader out of the sky so Luke could use the force and destroy the damn Death Star. Princess Leia saved him from the carbonite and they fell in love and saved the universe and had twin Jedi babies that went on to save the universe again. Now that’s the whole picture; the carbonite is just a piece. Okay?
...
So what, I like science fiction, anyone got a problem with that?
Video These two have been my favourite female characters for pretty much as long as I can remember. No matter how bad Grey's is, Bailey is always fantastic, and The Office goes from strength to strength writing Pam.
Best New Male Character:
Prince Arthur
“You’re dressed!”
“Nothing gets past you, does it Merlin?”
Hah, all the characters in Merlin are loveable, but I always enjoy Arthur centric episodes the most. He makes me laugh, especially when he's pointing out Merlin's buffoonary.
Best Returning Male Character:
Runners up: Robert Wilson, Alex Karev and Emerson Cod
Threeway Tie:
Ned, Seeley Booth and Chris Miles
Chuck: You do realise I can get new bees, I can make a new home for new bees
Ned You love these bees; "a happy hive's a happy home", and you can't be happy if you're dead...
Chuck; The last time I asked you to bring something back to life you said no.
Ned: That was your dad, that would have been weird if not actively traumatic.
BOOTH: Could Bones have killed Kirby? Temperance Brennan - I've worked with this woman. I've stood over death with her, I've faced down death with her. And Sweets, he's brilliant, he is, but he's wrong. She could not have done this.
BARRON: I didn't ask you your opinion of Dr. Brennan's character. I asked you, did she have time?
(Booth looks to Brennan) BOOTH: Yes. She had time.
Jal: I've been thinking about what Chris would have wanted me to say today. The advice he'd give me, which'd be something like, "Know what, babe? Fuck it. These guys know all about me. Tell them about someone else." So I thought I'd tell you about a hero of Chris's: a man called Captain Joe Kittinger. In 1960, climbing into a foil balloon, Captain Joe ascended 32 kilometres into the stratosphere. And then, armed only with a parachute, he jumped out. He fell for four minutes and thirty-six seconds, reaching seven hundred and forty miles per hour before opening his parachute five kilometres above the Earth. It had never been done before, and it's never been done since. He did it just because he could. And that's why Chris loved him; because the thing about Chris was, he said yes. He said yes to everything. He loved everyone. And he was the bravest boy- man-I knew. And that was-he flung himself out of a foil balloon every day. Because he could. Because he was. And that's why-and that's why we loved him
Best Hair:
Serena Van der Woodson
How gorgeous is her hair? I get pangs of envy on regular occaisions when watching Gossip Girl, but none moreso than in this episode. Gah, it's stunning.
Most tragic plotline:
Donna loses her memory
DONNA (in Turn Left): I’m nothing special; I’m a temp, no, not even that. I am nothing.
ROSE: Don't you see? Donna Noble, you're the most important woman in the world.
DONNA (in Journey's End: But why me?
NEW DOCTOR (like it's obvious): Cos you're special.
DONNA: Oh, I keep telling you, I'm not!
NEW DOCTOR: No, but you are. (looking at her as if he's just understanding) Oh. You really don't believe that, do you? I can see, Donna... what you're thinking. All that attitude. All that lip. Cos all this time... you think you're not worth it.
DONNA: Stop it!
NEW DOCTOR: Shouting at the world, cos no-one's listening. Well... why should they?
DONNA: Doctor. Stop it.
NEW DOCTOR: (proudly) But look at what you did!
Oh tragedy. What kills me is that she'd just finally understood that she was worth something. What she'd acheived over the season, the way it had added to her character and made her Donna Noble, who was sung about across the universe, it all went to waste. Donna Noble ended up right back at the beginning again. She begged him not to do it, tears in her eyes and yet he did. Goodbye Donna Noble, you were too good for the Doctor.
Worst plot twist
Zach’s the cannibal
I AM STILL TO ANGRY TO TALK ABOUT THIS. OR GIVE IT A QUOTE.
Best UST AND Best Friendship
Booth/Brennan
BEST RST
Runners up: House and Cuddy
Winners: Barney/Robin
Saddest moment:
Tie: Cassie cries over Chris, Wilson cries over Amber
There's no way a quote will do this justice.
Watch it. Now you could say she's crying over Adam, a guy she met like a day ago, but my opinion is that him leaving is just that last straw and it suddenly all hits her. Her biting into that apple, no longer starving herself, as the music swells...I cried and cried.
GOD THE TEARS. I love you Robert Sean Leonard.
Happiest moment:
Fleet finds Earth
Man, I know it all goes to pot like seconds later, but look how happy they were for that brief period! Lee almost strips! I was smiling so much. Until later of course.
Most romantic moment/BEST MOMENT OF FICTIONAL TV THIS YEAR:
Jim proposes to Pam
Pam Beesly: [yelling over the rain] Hey! This is not halfway! I did that math, I had to drive way longer than you. Montclair would've been closer so you have to buy lunch.
[Jim gets down on one knee]
Pam Beesly: What are you doing?
Jim Halpert: I just... couldn't wait.
Pam Beesly: Oh my God.
Jim Halpert: Pam, will you marry me?
Pam Beesly: Oh my God.
Jim Halpert: So?
Pam Beesly: [nodding head] Yes.
AAAAAAHHHH. What kills me is so happy they are, how they're laughing as they kiss. I loved it. They could have ended The Office right there and then and I wouldn't have wanted anything else (except maybe a happy ending for Michael and Holly.
Most touching moment:
Roslin and Adama
Video. Such a long time coming and oh so perfect. I adore their music theme as well.
Best Guest Star
Amy Ryan as Holly Flax
God I loved Holly. She totally made up for Pam being out of the office. She lifted the whole show up.
Best New Couple:
Tie: Chris/Jal, Michael/Holly
Chris: Jal, look at me. I was perfectly happy killing myself. But then you asked me to try. And for the first time in my life it felt like somebody actually gave a shit. That person was worth trying for. And now, I'd make the worlds record biggest sandwich if you asked me to. I'd kick old granny in the tits. I'd fill the rivers with panda pops. I'd...
Jal: Stop.
Chris: I fucked up big time. I'm more than sorry. I love you Jal. You're my whole world.
Best friends who become more. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to root for these two. They were absolutely brilliant together, bringing out the best side of each other. Such a good couple. Shame about the tragic end.
This came from nowhere, didn't it? I never thought there'd be a woman perfect for Michael and then *bam* Holly arrived. They were
such amazing dorks together. DAMN YOU DAVID WALLACE.
Best Snark AND Best Angst:
Chuck/Blair
Chuck: They say when you love something you should set it free
Blair: They say when you hate something you should slam the door in its face. (slams door in Chuck's face)
Chuck: I love it when you talk dirty.
Blair: Whatever you're going through, I wannt to be there for you.
Chuck: We've talked about this. You are not my girlfriend.
Blair: But I am me. And you are you. We're Chuck and Blair. Blair and Chuck. The worst thing you've ever done, the darkest thought you've ever had, I will stand by you through anything.
Chuck: And why would you do that.
Blair: Because I love you.
Chuck: Well, that's too bad.
Best Returning Couple:
Ned/Chuck, Jim/Pam
I actually hesitated before putting Jim and Pam on here, because I haven't been a huge fan of some of the developments this season, but then I was looking through screencaps and gosh I love it when they're smiling. I still love them.
Best Returning Shows:
Pushing Daisies, Battlestar Galactica
If you're not watching either of these well, a) I strongly dislike you because you're part of the reason Pushing Daisies has been cancelled and b) YOU'RE MISSING OUT. These shows are great. I was wary over BSG, because Season 3 was shaky at times, but I loved almost every episode. Pushing Daisies is like candy floss in TV form, it's colourful and sweet and it makes me smile more than any other show on TV.
Best New Shows:
Privileged, Merlin
Marco: Go on just pretend like we're not even here
Megan: I'm not talking to myself. I'm just practicing a conversation I'm going to have with a real person a later date. Totally different.
Megan: With great power comes great responsability... shout out to Uncle Ben
[conversation with Sage and Laurel...]
Megan: Uncle Ben is spider-man's uncle, not mine, i just wanted to make that clear
Hah, this show is not going to win any awards, but I sure like it. I literally only watched the Pilot because I was bored over summer, but I was suprised by how much I liked it for such a formulaic idea. Megan is brilliant fun, such a dork and the fabulous Baker twins have grown on me more and more each episode. I love their friendship and I love the beginnings of Sage and Luis (the snark, I'm a sucker for the snark!).
Promo.
Heh, this show isn't going to win any awards either (except maybe in gay subtext), but it makes me giggle. Especially all scenes with
Arthur and Merlin. Also, I'm basically in love with the way
Bradley James says Guinevere.
Best episodes
Drama: House 4.15/4.16, BSG 4.10
Comedy: The Office 4.14
The only one of The Office hour longs that has kept me laughing consistently the entire way through. Featuring the best Office prank ever (Dwight on Holly using poor Kevin "That's a button") and the best Office talking heads ever ("The real crime, I think, was the beard", "I cannot wait to go and visit Ryan in prison...") I loved it.
Dude, what an adrenalin rush. I cannot wait for Jan 15th.
Best Sporting moments:
Wimbledon, Olympics
Okay, I am biased because I adore tennis and I live in the UK, but Wimbledon is always my favourite event of the year. This year was great, it gave us one of the greatest finals of all time and, for the first time since FOREVER, a genuinely adorable British champion. Okay, that might have not got anywhere but here, but our junior girl Laura Robson won the Junior Wimbledon crown (she's only 14!) and is already light years ahead of Andy Murray in my esteems. She has a crush on Marat Safin! He wrote a letter to her!
So sweet.
And then the Men's Final. I can't remember being so wound up in a game of tennis EVER. That fourth set tie break, omg, I get flaily just thinking about it. Those passing shots! I was screaming. I'm going to embed a video here, it's just worth it (you should maybe watch it in HQ on Youtube though).

Then the Olympics:
Best year for Great Britain ever. So many amazing victories. We came fourth guys! And we're teeny tiny. That being said though, DON'T WANT IT IN LONDON.
Favourite tennis players:
Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal,
Giles Simon and Novok Djokavic.
Shh, I love tennis players. You should too. They're funny. Especially when trying to get to grips with classic English Christmas tunes. Example:

GENIUS.
ALSO GENIUS.
Best Cast:
Merlin
"Don't worry Merin fans, I have the magic phrase *sings* "Je ne comprende pas, je suis anglais."
I'm embedding a video here as well. I love them, the cast video diaries are AMAZINGLY good fun. Bradley James is probably clinically insane. You should watch this even if you don't watch the show

Best Show Dance EVER? I think so ♥
The caps came from all over the place, mostly found through google, but most of the Merlin caps came from
awakencordy and most of the office caps came from such-a-dork.com. If you recognise any of your caps please tell me and I'll credit you right away!
