I know that I'm most definitely in the minority that actually likes Emily/Maya but I can't help it. When I read the first couple of books I just wanted to squish them. I can totally relate to Emily in more ways than one especially the whole confusion~ thing. She's not really sure what she wants anymore because things have happened and kind of shifted her point of view which I can say I've been going through lately as well. I'm just so indecisive :S
I really liked the scene in the last episode where Emily tells Maya that she needs some space and some time to think things through. Maya was just so cool about it in both the show and the book (#2 Flawless) although everything happens a lot differently. Maya's response is practically the same and pretty awww worthy because she says she'll wait.
Maya: I care about you. So I’ll wait. You don’t need to say anything. You just need to know that.
This is how it went down in the books.
In the books the PLL crew is at this dance/social event called Foxy. Initially Maya invites Emily to go with her as her date but Emily is still at the stage where she doesn't want to be seen doing anything remotely lesbian-like with Maya nearby. Which is kind of ridiculous because really? Somehow Maya and her keep ending up alone and inches apart from each other and once they're there they really can't help themselves. I've totally been there at some point.
Anyway while taking time away from Maya, Emily finds herself growing to like creepy!Toby who is actually really sweet and nice. But still creepy. That being said, I LOVE show!Toby because he's the right amount of creepy (i.e. really) and he reminds me sooo much of Simon from Misfits who I just adore &hearts And here's where I'm torn. I kinda liked Toby/Emily in the books and I'm liking what I'm seeing in the show with them as friends (so far) since it's pretty obvious he likes her.
In the books Emily likes Toby and brings him as her date to Foxy where she gets her fortune told by some creepy fortune teller lady. Since book!Emily is really superstitious she starts to dwell on it throughout the night.
The woman extended a long fingernail toward her. “You need one, though. Something’s going to happen to you tonight. Something life-changing.”
Emily stiffened. “Me?”
“Yes, you. And the date you brought? He’s not the one you want. You must go to the one you really love.”
Emily’s mouth fell open, and her mind began to race.
I wasn't sure if the one she really loves is supposed to be referring to Maya or Alison. I guess what really happens by the end of the night is that she realizes she feels things for Toby but it's not even in the same category as what she feels when she's with Maya. Aw forbidden romance :') Ben tries to be all rapey again but Emily takes care of it. Then there's the "I'll wait" part.
She paused, looking at Maya’s ivory geisha-style dress. She looked so much prettier than all of the blond, French-twisted, Chanel clones she’d seen on her way in. She ran her hands along the sides of her own dress, wondering if Maya was checking her out too. “I…I should probably get back to my date,” Emily stammered.
Maya took a tiny step to the side. Only Emily couldn’t move an inch.
“I have a secret for you before you go,” Maya said.
Emily came closer and Maya leaned into Emily’s ear. Her lips didn’t touch it, but they were so close. Tingles shot up Emily’s back, and she heard herself breathe in sharply. It wasn’t right to respond this way, but she just…couldn’t…help it.
Go to the one you really love.
“I’ll wait for you,” Maya whispered, her voice a little sad and a lot sexy. “However long it takes.”
Hilariously, long before any of that happened, when Emily holds his hand when they get there, she doesn't feel the sparks.
When Toby noticed her face, he quickly smiled. “Not literally.” He squeezed her hand. “You’re much prettier than all the girls here.”
Emily flushed. Only she was finding that her insides didn’t turn upside down when he said it or when he touched her. They should. Toby looked hot. Gorgeous, actually, in his black suit and black wingtips, with his hair pushed back off his angular, square-jawed face. Every girl was checking him out. When he’d shown up on her porch, even mild-mannered Carolyn had squealed, “He’s so cute!”
But when he held her hand, as much as she wanted it to feel like something, it felt like nothing. It was like holding hands with her sister.
Overall I hope they don't make Toby ruin Emily/Maya on the how because I love him and Emily as BFFs.
