This post has CAPSLOCK, just so you know.
+ First things first. Gwen, oh god. GWEN. Brave, proud, awesome Gwen. She's been a bit troubled, she's been a bit lonely, she was so terrified in there with Hengist and yet so brave and just when she thought she was figuring out a way to deal with this Arthur-related awkwardness, LANCELOT COMES BACK, being all NOBLE AND HEROIC and POETIC (seriously, he looked like he wanted to burst into sonnets every time he spoke), and what's a girl to do?
+ And Gwen's loneliness and fear, argh. She knows she has no position, no power, no stability in her life except Morgana and some vague promises of niceness from Arthur, and now Lancelot, who has NO REASON apart from RIDICULOUS NOTIONS OF NOBILITY AND HONOUR AND THE BRO CODE (I do believe Arthur and Lancelot are the original bros, yes) to leave Gwen leaves her anyway. Oh, Gwen! ♥
+ BUT SPEAKING OF LONELINESS, GWEN, YOU KNOW WHO ELSE IS LONELY? You're right, Morgana said the same thing in the previous episode, and she practically came out to Uther in public, and you know the solution to all this LONELINESS, right? ♥♥♥
+ The Gwen/Morgana in this episode *killed* me. Oh, girls, with their simple, uncomplicated caring as opposed to Arthur and Lancelot's Poetry and Honour that ultimately leads to leaving her and pining nobly! There's a reason why A/G/L has always bored me in legend, whereas I'm all over the slash in this show.
+ It's possible that we are supposed to take Arthur seriously, and it's possible someday I even will, but today is not that day. I mean, just look at
the many shades of his longing (courtesy
roga)! I do want to squish him in this episode, though, despite his really mean 'I only tried to save her because Morgana begged me' in the end. Poor thing, it's so hard, being prince. No one understands him. But at least he still has Merlin, who loves him no matter what.
+ Also Merlin climbed up a tower and fell of his horse. I think I loved him best when he tells Arthur, with absolute certainty, that Gwen is alive. Because yes, that's our Merlin. He loves his friends.
+ And last, but not the least. Morgana. MORGAANA! Stripping! For the Plot! And fighting! In her underwear! And arguing with Uther! And sweeping into Arthur's room in full rant mode! And hugging in the end! Oh, Morgana. And there's already Big Secrets between the two of them, and this will drive them apart and then Morgana will go evil and Gwen will become Queen and they will never be friends again like this, AND OH MY HEART! *weeps*
+ On a slightly more serious note, there was some serious Gwen/Morgana subtext in this episode, to the point of being disturbing. Gwen/Morgana self-sacrifice paralleled Lancelot/Gwen self-sacrifice, right down to the looking back of longingness. And Morgana practically coming out to Uther in the court. And Gwen hugging Morgana (OKAY, STILL THE BEST SCENE EVER) and that look at Arthur, paralleling Morgana hugging Uther and looking at Gwen. Morgana is also the character who reads most as 'gay' (well, bi, because she's Morgana) to me, and all of this getting a bit disturbingly close to the Evil Lesbian. I'm not sure why I'm even thinking about this show, but I can't seem to help it.
