What with the cascade of jobs I had yesterday despite the fact that it was Passover and my boss knew I had someplace to be, it has been an extremely harrowing week
on many levels. On the other hand, it seems to be winding down rather nicely, as it was nice to see everybody at the Passover seder.
- The weather has been very erratic of late, with little continuity between days. Twice already it has snowed on the same day that we have a wonderful afternoon. It's like the weather is off its meds....
- My new television is working beautifully (indeed, it is one of the few things this week that has been consistently decent). I have been going through my collection and marveling anew at discs I've had in my collection for months, including some where in 1080i/720p the transfer looked merely okay (and of course there always are situations where either the transfer or the condition of the elements cause the picture on a film to be less than ideal). There are three settings for the 120 hz feature, low, medium and high and with experimentation I found the limitations and advantages. With very few exceptions,¹ I am content to maintain the 120 hz at minimum; you get the advantage of the refresh rate without making the picture look overly video-esque. The artifacts I mentioned are present but barely noticeable in comparison to the amount of judder and whatnot that the 120 hz compensates for. It's not so impressive with sources that aren't high def, I have noticed.
Another feature the television has that makes is superior to just every set I've had before is the "Just Scan" feature, which is 1:1 pixel mapping and therefore eliminates overscan, centering the picture on the screen. This means that rather than slightly reframing a film shot in, say, 1.66:1 for 1.77:1 (the native 16 x 9 aspect ratio of televisions today), the image is sideboxed instead, giving the full height of the image. It is perfect for Blu-ray and HD-DVD, though I understand that signals with additional information, such as closed captioning, will be visible on the top of the screen in this mode. - Why would somebody send something certified mail to a residence? Unless it shows up on a Saturday, they'll be delivering the letter while I'm at work.

¹ - An example of a film that looks better with the 120 hz set to maximum would be Bram Stoker's Dracula, which has a really lousy transfer without it. This is a film I think is rather silly, but I enjoy because of the design work and the cinematic tricks Francis Coppola performed, such as the special effects that were designed to be of the period (George Melies and the like).
