So, after 22 months I am now free of braces. It's good to have my own teeth back but, sweet fuck, retainers are annoying. The removal proccess was... boring and painful. The scraping and scratching, the impressions and x-rays, and then, of course, blood. One part of my braces had apparently cut into my gum and when it was removed the gum had pulled back from the tooth causing a hole near my tooth. Which then swelled. It was as gross as it sounds. Not really painful until it came time to bond my retainer to my bottom teeth and well... let's just say that.. cement stuff in open wounds hurts like a sonofabitch.
More painful was the drive to my orthodontist two hours away. Driving 200+ km in the dark with six inches of snow on the road does not a happy journey make. Then, when we were approximately 20km from our destination we were passed by a snow plow that proceeded to blind us. Seriously. It was like being stuck inside a giant snowball. Not that I've ever been trapped inside a giant snowball but... I imagine that's what it'd be like.
Either way, it's done and I'm glad. It's nice to have my own teeth back.
