So far the highlights of this last week include:
Finding a pair of huge pearl drop earrings at Forever 21. I've been wanting a pair forever, inspired by the lovely pearls dangling from the ears of 17th century ladies, and now they are mine!
Going to McDonalds on Wednesday for a quick lunch and being waited on by a rather lovely-looking guy. I'm never very good around men I find attractive, but he was very tall, so it was easy not to make eye contact!
Realizing that in the last three months I have lost about 20 lbs. I am so freaking happy you have no idea. So far I haven't really noticed a change in my looks, but my weight tends to leave my hips and butt first, and most of my pants are barely staying on now. It's really encouraging, and I can't wait til I start to see visible results.
Also... I FINALLY saw Avatar at the theater on Monday. I really enjoyed it. I am not someone generally impressed by CGI. I mean I like it when it's done well, but I don't go to a movie just to see the graphics. But this was one of those movies where you cannot watch it and not realize just how incredible the visuals you're seeing are. The landscape was fantastic. When Grace and Jake's team first lands in the jungle and they set out and you get that first panning view of their surroundings my jaw dropped. The Naavi were amazing. They looked real, touchable, and I found myself constantly having to remember that they were mostly CG. (Another thing I was constantly taken aback by was how absolutely gorgeous Neytiri was. Every five minutes I found myself going "Wow.") And the glowing plants at night? Breathtakingly beautiful. The idea that 90%+ of what I was seeing was completely computer graphics was mind-blowing.
Anthony enjoyed it much as I did I think, especially the graphics. He was also pleasantly surprised by the realism of the nature vs. technology fights, having been expecting the age-old T-Rex-bashes-through-concrete-fence-without-a-scratch bit. The only thing he really couldn't go with was that Jake fell for "a giant blue cat-woman." He asked me what I thought and my response was "Well... since half the reason I wanted to see this movie was because I found Jake's avatar so wierdly attractive, no, I really can't say I agree with you." lol And yes, that really is half the reason I wanted to see the movie...
August hated it. No surprise! For August (in fiction at least, or so he says) cool uniforms, organization, and technology > everything else. As soon as the lights came on he whipped around in his seat and hissed "Divine intervention?! Bull!" Later on he goes "Did anyone else find that scene where Neytiri was holding human Jake creepy?" Personally, I found that scene so beautiful I nearly cried.
(As to the racism charges that have been swirling endlessly around this movie... Sure, you can read it as racist if you want. Really, if you read into something enough, you can make it say anything you want. So if you want to see Avatar as primitive non-whites being saved by the technologically dependent white father, you can. Or you can see it as a technologically dependent white outsider being told the only way to be a good person is to become a primitive non-white. But the great thing about being both white and Native American is that I look at the situation without bias against either race, and so have no agenda, and when I say that while their are elements that could be skewed to make the story have a racist viewpoint I don't think that was the intent or outcome of the movie, people generally have to take me seriously.)
But anyway, I really enjoyed it, and glad I got a chance to see it in theaters. (I hear there's going to a theater re-release in August and I would definately be interested in seeing it again then. I believe there's going to be about six minutes of new content, too...) Also, who else has been listening to the soundtrack nonstop since they saw the movie? I can't get enough of it.
