Convene...I like that word...

I went hiking again today. Man, it seems like everyone's thinking this is hippie business. *shrug* It may be it may not be. I'm just hiking, lol. This time, though, instead of taking pictures, I brought my art journal. And I trudged uphill to the place that I call (in my head anyways) Eclipse point...because I think it'd be perfect for watching an eclipse because you can see the whole expanse of the sky, and it's perched right at the top of our first hill, so you can see down a ways, but if you walk forward too far, it seems like you're going to fall down the side of the hill. It's quite steep. As I sat there in the green grassiness, I sketched the view and worked on a few pages in my art journal. It was good, actually. Drawing things from what you see is work, let me tell you that. But I like how it turned out. I hiked up further to the hill where you can see the bay. I sat down there in the high grass, and wrote. It started with a line, then progressed to a creative essay:

It's an experience all to itself, sitting in nature. You try to relax and remain relatively sedentary, while nature takes her course and insists on moving about. Wind rustles your hair, papers, the grass around you. The sunlight hangs about you like a fog. And you simply cannot get anything done. No papers written, no books read, no naps taken... all because of the splendor that surrounds you. And of course should we get anything accomplished out here? Of course not. Mother nature is a selfish mistress. Her beauty is breathtaking, surely, but one may find that the images in the mind lend to an all-encompassing Jane Austen impression. Every time you describe, it becomes a tiny Romantic movement all unto itself. It is true that man belongs out here, within the green of creation. The same ooze and gore that ticks our blood flow makes up the innards of Gaia, herself. Our streams pulsate with the sticky residue whose cousins course along tree trunks. Truly, what is man that the Almighty is mindful of him? Or better yet, that mankind is mindful of him? The societal shifts that have lended themselves to the "progress" of humanity seem to have forgotten that people are not made up of steel and aluminum. The inside and outside of us is flesh. It is warm, flexible, soft, colored flesh. The very fact that we can see bone protruding out of our mouths contributes to this nature. And yet we isolate these little worlds, pretending they are but semiconductors. Are you worth anything? I don't know, can you perform rote math problems or partner with a computer in office work? Indeed man has lost his flesh and proclaimed it faulty. We threw it out several hundred years ago with the rise of industry. Man is the machine now. We are the steel bones of society, cold and heartless as ice. And when our new, hardened selves reconvene with Terra and her dirty soil, we are repugnant. "Kill this! And take the oil." Why run around when you'll just get dirty? New anti-bacterial wipes kill 99% of germs, but we are still unsatisfied. Maybe it is possible to die of sterilization. Brown grass looks better than rust. Or is that terra-cotta brown? I don't know, let me check my paint swatch.I've been struggling with the issue of metal vs flesh ever since we went to see the cadavers at the Body Worlds exhibit. Dead bodies are truly enlightening. I wish I could see that exhibit again. Haha, and after I had explored a forested section of the hill, I emerged to hear my mom yelling for me from the house. I have to leave a note now when I leave to go up the hill. :P

EDIT: I just got done watching "Valerie and her Week of Wonders" on youtube. It's a Czech film from 1970 based off a book. And wow...It's absolutely stunning. Apparently it's a coming of age piece, but wow...between the vampires, amazing soundtrack, and beautiful cinematography, I'm surprised they had room left for a meaning. Haha, but really, go watch it. Ahh, so beautiful.

Ps- You ever get frustrated with starting too many sentences with "I"? It's annoying and feels like selfishness.
Pps- So much of the interaction between people is artificial face paint. I wish I knew people by their art journals, not their facade.
Ppps- I wish good weather came with more clouds
