as evidenced by all previous writings, my brain has been getting quite hairy lately. in an attempt to stave off the chittering twinges of madness i have been taking frequent sabbaticals up to the mountains to sit under trees and chase crawdads in the creek. last week on one such constitutional i had just begun going down the path towards the creek when i heard a thin high voice calling my name from behind me and to the left. stopping in my tracks i spun around and listened, hearing it again, louder, closer.
i took a few steps backward the way that i had come and suddenly saw a small bright spot of white perched on top of a dead tree about 20 feet above my head. as i took another step closer it grew brighter, and then faster than my eyes could track it, it was before me at my feet, a small glowing white creature with large round yellow eyes and tall wispy ears. it just sat there staring up at me, and said my name once more, in such a way that i was not sure if it was a question, a command, or if it was giving me my name that very moment. i consciously reminded myself to breathe and slowly went down on my knees, at which point the creature came up, put it's forelimbs on my knees, and then climbed onto me, at which point i stood up carefully, allowed it to balance itself on my shoulder, and started back towards my car.
on the way home, i named it sylphide, or perhaps it told me to call it that, i'm not sure. for the last four days it has remained in my room, eating anything and everything offered to it, chewing on the corners of my favorite books, and falling asleep on my pillow next to my head every night.
