I remember you bought me a 99
from the truck that stopped on your street
because The Boy and I were on the pavement.
You asked The Boy if he wanted an ice cream
and he sneered, "The ice cream truck is for weans."
You saw my shoulders slump
as I looked at my melting cone.
You raised an eyebrow.
"I love an ice cream."
You bought a cherry ice pop for yourself.
Later it made your lips and tongue red
and made me laugh.
"Well," The Boy said consideringly.
The cornetto left a ring of chocolate
around his lips but
he didn't learn the lesson
you were trying to teach him.
