Smallville Independent
December 24th 2005 Hiatus Edition

In place of an Episode Review Round-up, I'm linking Upcoming Episode Spoilers, due to the hiatus. If you click on this section, you will not be risking your spoiler freedom...promise. I'll only be listing posts that you could potentially visit in order to be thoroughly spoiled. sv_independent, though, will remain a spoiler free zone.

Also, because 2006 is right around the corner, some of this edition will cover interesting posts from this year in fandom. Please enjoy!

Meta Posts

Spurred on by spoilers (which she doesn't detail in post) for an upcoming episode, ethrosdemon shares her frustrations with Smallville and it's characterization of Clark Kent within the larger context of Superman canon, especially DCU. Her post here seems to have jumpstarted a multimedia challenge: A Very Small(ville) Crisis: a DCU in the Smallvilleverse challenge

Though ethrosdemon does not discuss the nature of the spoilers in her post, you may want to beware of her comments section, which could include more detailed talk of the spoilers.

In September, bop_radar reflected on Lex's character growth and development in recap of Season 4. In post, she offers insight into Lex's struggle with his darkness, Alexander, in Oynx and deftly makes associations with Lionel's own internal changes post-Transference. She also touches on sibling love and animosity in Lucy, and the corrosive nature of Metropolis immorality on Smallvillians, as more links (like the Teagues) are created between the two places. Her post is here.

Paraphrasing Spider-man, pasdoll discusses her thoughts on Lex Luthor's characterization in Lexmas, "with great happiness, comes great suffering". Her post deftly explains Smallville's seemingly sadistic way of bringing pain and suffering to those in mindful search of joy and comfort. Interestingly, she also examines how this is perpetuated throughout the show in every character's narrative. Her post is here.

If you find yourself watching Smallville and wondering when on earth it turned so thoroughly into Lanaville, you might be interested in reading khonen1's post on the subject of Lana's canonical Mary Sue-ness. khonen1 discusses how Lana is forced into the archetypical role of Perfect Woman by not only Clark, but also by Lex and possibly by the network itself. One can't help but feel sympathetic as she struggles to fulfill this impossible and constraining role. khonen1's post is here.

Don't Miss These Posts

Though I'd like sv_independent to primarily be a news and meta community, leaving fanfiction recs and challenge information to sv_fanfic and perhaps sv_inquiry, I had to mention undermistletoe's Mystery Schmoop Week. It's an interesting week of the undermistletoe challenge when authors anonymously post their artwork and stories and watch as their friends and fellow fans try to guess from a list of potentials who the actual artist is. It's great fun to guess and watch, and as always, the stories and artwork are exemplary. Check it out and try to put in your guess before it's too late! The polls end on the 26th.

In the spirit of the season, people are posting Christmas manips and cards on their LJs. Here are a few of the many that are out there, across fandom:
mkitty_03 lovely Season's Greetings, kyanoswolf's From Clark's Scrapbook and digitalwave's not-worksafe The Best Christmas Ever, originally posted for cjandre's birthday.

For a hearty Santa-sized laugh, check out estrella30's New Smallville Picture Book-The 12 Days of Lexmas.

Also, as a bonus, Belle and Sebastian's hilarious "Twelve Days of Christmas" (thanks to fromward).

Upcoming Episode Spoilers

Okay, if you want to be totally spoiled, check out mkitty_03's post here, estrella30's post here (which includes a spoilery picture), and kwerkee's short post Ep 510 Spoilers, which contains a funny spoilery picture.

Remember, when new episodes air, sv_live opens for discussion. It's a great place to meet weekly and enjoy the show with fellow fans!

LJ Announcements

If you haven't heard, goss's igoss is no more. Though we'll all mourn this loss, she has soothingly offered a Fanart Year in Review. It's great to have access to favorites again and follow goss's progression last year through styles and fandoms and mediums.

After a lengthy hiatus, sv_vids is back up and running with new co-mods enderwiggin24, elandrialore and sori1773. To read about this development, check out their New Mods! post. The community is updated frequently, so make sure to check back often.

Fan and Resource Profile

If you're a beginner interested in creating fannish artwork like manips, icons, wallpaper or lj backgrounds, you might find yourself lost and in need of a little guidance. Perhaps you'll desire an interesting photoshop brush or texture, an icon tutorial or a screencap. For a novice in need, there are a *lot* of lj's out there to muck through in search for just the right thing. Or, you could stop by elli's livejournal and find a mind-bogging, all-comprehensive collection of resources and materials. elli's resource links are amazing, user-friendly and fun. She makes a girl feel like a kid in a candy store. If you find that special something you'd like to play with and use in your artwork, please make sure you give her a heads up and your thanks. She totally deserves it.

Thanks for reading! Special thanks to both fromward and enderwiggin24 for their input and post ideas. I appreciate it very much. Please check back for new editions in the coming weeks. Or, email me at: svindependent@gmail.com with any post ideas.

If you find the Independent linked to one of your posts against your wishes, please feel free to comment and I'll remove it. Thanks.
