Language stuff!
I was reading good ol' Language Log the other day, and spotted a couple of things I thought I'd share:
As a complete aside, it's been a beautiful day today - I've really enjoyed it. Clear skies, cool breezes... my day has even featured puppies. Puppies! :D
- A fairly short dictionary of Strine from 1965. Looking at it, and particularly reading things out loud, you can really hear the change in the Australian accent in the last 40 years. Few people (in the major cities, I should note; I've not been to rural centres for a while) sound like this now, but the accent described can be heard in old TV and film.
- Singular 'they'. This time, by Obama, and completely justified.
- Jonathan Coulton, the passive voice and sensitivity.
