Chapter 4: Distraught and Betrayal
Breakfast was awkward, not because of the tension in the room but because Inoo wasn’t there at all, for Hikaru it was almost heart wrenching to act like there was nothing wrong and that the person he’s supposed to be mad at is not in the room. Hikaru wanted with all his heart to be mad at Yabu Kota. A wish that wouldn’t come true at all, he was just way too in love with the man who was cheating on him, with the person sitting directly across from him, and it wasn’t until Daiki kicked him that he realized that the other’s were talking to him.
“Are you alright Hikaru?” Chinen asked quietly.
“I’m fine, still a little tired, that’s all, don’t worry I’ll be fine.” Hikaru said softly to not worry the boy but those who knew him best (Daiki and Inoo) could clearly see that there was something wrong.
“We should do up these dishes real quick and head to work, we have some hard routines to cover today especially the one we can’t get through because of Hikaru’s illness,” Yuto said calmly, without even realizing he just added fuel to the fire.
“I’ll get it today, don’t worry, I’ve been off since I’ve been out of school, don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” Hikaru forced a smile. “Just put the dishes in the dishwasher, it will take care of everything.”
It was another twenty minutes before the six of them were ready to go, and they were half way to the building when they ran into Keito. “Morning you guys. Did you all come together?”
“Yeah, we had breakfast at Hikaru’s house; we couldn’t get a hold of you this morning though, why was that?” Yuto asked curiously, while grabbing Keito’s hands and swinging them around.
“My cell phone battery was dead, it was charging.”
“That’s not good, Yama-chan made an awesome breakfast,” Chinen said softly. Yamada smiled at the compliment but said nothing. Together, the eight of them entered the building and their practice room only to find Ryutaro sitting alone and unaware of another’s presence in the room let alone eight others’. He was sitting, but more like slouching, on one of the couches in the far corner of the room. It was one of the more comfortable spots in the room and the way he was positioned showed how comfortable he was while playing on his Nintendo DS.
Chinen snuck up on him and hugged him almost yelling “Ohayou!” right in his ear. Ryutaro nearly jumped out of his seat once he realized that there were others in the room. He shakingly said a “ohayou” to the others who were all holding back their laughter except for Hikaru who just happened to be rolling on the floor laughing his head off. This was passed over by everyone else in the room since they knew what a poor week Hikaru had been having and that he most likely just needed a good laugh.
But after about twenty minutes, when he didn’t stop and had actually forgotten what he was laughing at, Yuto go over and give him a nice hard flick on the nose. Hikaru stood up while rubbing his nose while Yuto walked away grinning, silence settled back into the room as they waited for the last member to show up.
Yabu didn’t come within the hour, so they had decided to start without him. For always being the first one there, or at least one of the first ones, being the very last and late by over an hour was just absurd for Yabu. He was never late, he frowned on lateness, you call or you tell someone else to call for you, but you don’t just be late. It was just not like him. It was also at that moment that Hikaru realized that his Yabu, was no longer the same person, he fell in love with all those years ago. It wasn’t Yabu’s lateness for the day, that made him realize the truth, but because of the little things, Yabu loved to hurt Hikaru, it was fun for him, but that wasn’t Yabu Kota. That was a different person.
Hikaru was confused now. Why hadn’t he seen it before? Was it because of the laughing that cleared Hikaru’s mind? Was it because he was so caught up in wanting to hate Inoo that he actually clouded his mind on the things that Yabu did? Either way, whatever correct question and answer it was, Hikaru was not going to leave Yabu. He knew he had to, he knew he should, but would he? No. Yabu was his, even if he did stray a little for the few weeks or whatever it was, Yabu was his and he was going to get him back. Even if it meant sabotaging Yabu and Inoo’s relationship, and maybe even Hikaru and Inoo’s friendship in the process.
Hikaru needed a plan. He needed the best way to approach Inoo without scaring him or making him doubt that Hikaru was lying to him. Hikaru needed Inoo to know that he was with Yabu first and that Inoo was the other “woman”, and not the other way around. Hikaru, couldn’t just tell Inoo, no, he had to convince him. Hikaru needed to think of the consequences of what he may or may not say to attempt to get it in Inoo’s head that Yabu was not his and that he should just bugger off. But that needed to wait until they took a break or until practice was done.
It was about two hours into practice when Yabu finally showed. His grandmother was sick and he had to go visit her with his family, which was weird because Inoo had stayed at Yabu’s last night and had left early that morning to go to Hikaru’s, so this excuse had a few people confused, it could have been the truth, and he could have been lying, either way he didn’t call and he broke one of his own vows, of never being late.
“How’s it all going you guys?” Yabu asked as he looked at the sweaty bunch. “Tired?” The other’s just shot him a look that said ‘are you kidding me?’ “What have we covered so far?”
“Just about everything, I don’t know why we have such long practices on songs we can do in our sleep,” Daiki whined. He was tired and weak, and sore from sleeping in that uncomfortable position the entire night, he didn’t want to complain though, as he told himself before, it was for Hikaru, of course Daiki was going to have to deal with some back pain for the day but it was worth it. Just to see the smile come back on Hikaru’s face the moment the idiot Yabu walked in the door, was completely worth the pain and suffering he was dealing with now.
“It’s so we can do them in our sleep Dai-chan,” Yuto laughed, “it’s so we can do one concert performance after another and still be able to do it while we are exhausted from head to toe, it’s so we can perform early in the morning and late at night on very little sleep and still make it look perfect.”
“Besides, Dai-chan, we aren’t the only ones doing it, the other groups practice daily, and for even longer periods of time, just be happy we don’t have instruments to play perfectly or rollerblades to synch with our music,” Keito said calmly.
“It makes sense when you think about it,” Ryutaro said softly, “just look at the older groups too, they rarely practice together and yet they still pull it off, which means that they have to know their timing and placing perfectly or else the entire thing will be messed up.”
“Just think of us as the lucky ones, who get together almost daily to practice together, because there are so many of us, we need to be right on time,” Yamada continued.
“Yeah just be glad that we can practice together,” Takaki finished.
“I guess you’re all right, I didn’t know what I was thinking, and maybe I’m out of it because I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
“Sorry Dai-chan, it’s all my fault, I kept you up,” Hikaru apologized, this created looks from the others, looks of jealousy from Yabu and surprisingly Inoo, looks of curiosity from Ryutaro, Chinen, Yamada, and Keito, and looks of humour from Yuto and Takaki. They were both thinking the worst and had to bite their tongues to hold in their laughter.
Daiki just shook his head and walked away while mumbling something about a bathroom. Daiki let his friends draw their own conclusions on what happened last night, only Daiki knew what had really happened since Hikaru fell asleep. Only Daiki knew what really went on in Hikaru’s head as he lay there resting against Daiki’s leg. Only Daiki knew what Hikaru mumbled in his sleep that night. And it wasn’t something that was going to be released to the others anytime soon. It was Daiki’s little secret that he would share with no one. Hikaru’s secret wish was for Daiki and Daiki alone.
The normalcy of the scene in front of him was eerie when Daiki returned, for several weeks things had not been normal, the atmosphere in the room had been awkward and Daiki didn’t want to stay in it for too long. He couldn’t figure out if the others had noticed it especially because none of them ever seemed to react to it or become weird when it changed. To Daiki it was only when he entered the room with everybody in it that he felt it.
~~~~~~~~~~
Practice had started and ended without any problems, it was after work that Hikaru had decided to confront Inoo. He tried his hardest to convince him; he pleaded and begged for Inoo to believe. But Inoo would have nothing of it, he was in denial, and it was because of Hikaru that he now doubted everything he ever had with Yabu Kota. Hikaru had never lied to Inoo before and he never had the habit of lying either, so why was this so important to him.
Why was Hikaru so obsessed with trying to break Yabu and Inoo up? Hikaru had never been anything but the best friend to Inoo, so why was he trying to break his heart. There had to be some truth behind it right? Hikaru would never do that, it was just not him, so Inoo turned to the only person who could answer these questions in Inoo’s head, Yabu Kota.
Inoo called Yabu on his phone and demanded that they meet in one of the spare practice and storage rooms. Yabu didn’t think that he would be ambushed by Inoo’s questions when he got there though; it had completely caught him off guard.
“I need to ask you something, Kota, and I demand the truth,” Inoo asked calmly, he was doing his best to keep his temper down.
“Okay, what is it Kei-chan?” Yabu asked sweetly.
“You’ve been cheating on Hikaru with me?” Inoo asked, it wasn’t a question though, it was more of a statement, either way it required a straight yes or no answer.
“Y-yes,” Yabu stuttered “He knew though, so I didn’t see the problem~”
“He knew!? He knew and he was okay with it?” Inoo asked almost yelling, this was a side of him that no one ever saw, Inoo didn’t yell, he never needed to, but this was just too much, yes Hikaru was the one who told him in the first place, but Yabu didn’t need to know that just yet. “I don’t think so Kota, no wonder he’s been so cold with me lately. I didn’t even know about it, how could you do that to him? To me? Don’t you love us? If not, do you even love one of us?”
“I do love both of you, but how did you find out?”
“That is not important, if you loved us, how could you cause so much pain?” Inoo asked simply, tears were starting to well in his eyes and he did not like it.
“Who told you?” Yabu asked again, he did not like this betrayal, even if it was hypocritical of him, but he didn’t see it that way at all.
“I’m not telling you, I promised that person I wouldn’t say anything, now answer my question!” Inoo was mad, screw being sad and betrayed, let alone lied to, his anger was now the only emotion that he felt.
“No, I didn’t know what I was doing, alright? I didn’t realize I was hurting him or you, Hika already knew that I was with you and I had no idea how much it was hurting him. I don’t know what has been going on with me. I’ve been with Hikaru for so long and I’m like addicted to him, but I have been with you for so long as well so I don’t know what to do.”
“I know what to do,” said a mysterious voice from behind a partition.
“Takaki! Why are you eavesdropping?” Yabu scolded, though his face looked as though he was just caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar.
“I didn’t, so why are you so shocked Kota-kun, we all know something was up between the four of you,” Takaki shot back.
“Four of us?” Inoo asked, with him being the “innocent” one in all of this was now full of a rainbow of emotions. “Who else is in all of this?”
“If you don’t know then I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll figure it out eventually, or you’ll be told, either way, his part was obviously in your faces or were you to caught up with Yabu-kun to realize his part?”
“Takaki, I was just a victim in all of this! I had no idea that Kota was with Hikaru! Why are you taking it out on me?”
“Sorry Inoo-chan,” Takaki said and gave him a quick hug, “I didn’t mean it, really.”
“It’s alright, but seriously who is it?”
“Never mind,” Takaki brushed it off. “Kota, the only way to fix this is with the four of you getting in one room and talking it out, just talking.”
“You know that won’t happen, Hikaru’s been avoiding me like the plague ever since I told him off for being more than friends with Dai-chan.”
“WHAT!?” Takaki shouted, “That is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard here you are cheating on him with his other best friend. Who else is he supposed to go to? There really is only one option in that situation but to go to the only other person who is also being affected by it all.”
“Daiki is the fourth?” Inoo asked, “But why?”
“Inoo-chan, if you haven’t figured it out by now, then you’re as slow as Chinen,” Yabu said softly, but he was trying to get the conversation off him. “I have to go,” he said while looking at his watch, “see you tomorrow, good work today.”
Yabu dashed out of the room, leaving the two silent and upset. “So how come you were in here? Did you follow us or something?”
“No, I was sleeping; Yama-chan has kept me up almost all night the past few days, so I’ve barely gotten any sleep.”
“What were you doing?”
“Oh this and that,” Takaki again brushed off Inoo’s curious questions. “You know what you have to do now right?”
“Yes, I have to tell Hikaru.”
“Exactly, I’ll bring him here, you, in the meantime, think of what you want to say.” Takaki ordered and with a slight nod from Inoo, he dashed out the door.
Five minutes later and a few deep breaths from Inoo, Takaki returned with Hikaru in tow. Hikaru clearly showed that he did not want to be there. “Takaki said that you wanted to speak with me.”
“Yes he does, now talk,” Takaki demanded and walked out the door.
“Well…” Hikaru urged.
“I’m so sorry,” Inoo started.
“He admitted it then?” Hikaru said sadly.
“Yes, I’m sorry, I didn’t believe you, I never knew, really I didn’t, I’m so dense, we’ve known each other for so long and yet I had no idea. I hurt you and I don’t know if you could ever forgive me, or if you will ever forgive me. I still want to be friends with you, I didn’t mean to hurt you, I love him Hikaru, I know it’s not something you want to hear right now but I’m so sorry.”
“Inoo, stop,” Hikaru threw in, “I’m not mad at you, you didn’t know, you were the victim here as well, it’s not your fault you were sucked in by his boyish charm, I was too remember?”
“Yes, I’m so sorry, I didn’t believe you after practice, I just want to be with him and I still do, is that so shameful? So much that I’d do it to one of my best and oldest friends? I’m so sorry Hika, I’ll stop seeing him. As much as I love him, there is some else I love just as much, I’ll never know if he’ll return my feelings after all this. I ruined it for everybody. It’s all my fault.”
“No you didn’t and no it isn’t. You still have a chance Kei; you can still be with someone else. You just have to believe that they will return your feelings. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s easier to be like the cliché and love and lost rather than to have loves at all. Without saying your feelings to this person, you will never know how they feel in return. You will be stuck wondering.”
“Hikaru, you’re such a good friend, I don’t know what I did to deserve it but thank-you, it means everything to me, really.”
“Go tell him alright, tell him and bear the consequences of your actions.” Hikaru smiled and Inoo gave him a deep hug, all of Inoo’s emotions bottled into one were given in this one hug.
“You’re the best Hikaru,” Inoo said and then forced Takaki to let go of the door that he was holding to keep them from escaping. Inoo gave Hikaru one last smile and bounced out the door.
“You okay?” Takaki asked softly to the sad boy, “that took a lot of guts to not punch him, I know I would.”
“I can’t punish him Takaki, he didn’t know, he’s just as innocent as I am in this situation, and as much as I wanted to hit him, I shouldn’t have any reason to give it to him.”
“But he slept with your boyfriend!”
“I know that, I still can’t do anything about it Takaki.”
“You’re too nice Yaotome-san,” Takaki said jokingly, but this joke earned him a very hard punch from Hikaru. Takaki winced on impact and decided that Hikaru was right in not using violence in talking to Inoo. A punch like that would have broke poor fragile Inoo, and obviously Hikaru knew that.
“Get out of here Takaki, go find Yama-chan,” Hikaru said softly, “I heard he was looking for you.”
“Course he was, he’s always looking for me.” Takaki huffed and left the room.
Hikaru was now left alone in the empty spare room. He was left to ponder about the day’s events. He was left to think of the next move and he was left to realize that things will never be the same again.
Hikaru stayed in the empty room for a good hour, just thinking in the quiet air. For the entire time he was undisturbed and then like a ripple in a pond, his phone rang and there was a knock at the door. Luckily, his phone was just a text message so he let it be and allowed the person to enter the room, it was Daiki.
“Hey Dai-chan, what’s up?” Hikaru asked. He gave Daiki a smile of assurance but he wasn’t fazed.
“Just checking up on you, Inoo told me that you were the one to tell him about you and Yabu. I’ve never seen him so sad before, it’s awful.”
“I told him I wasn’t mad at him but maybe I should be? I don’t know, he told me that he still wanted to be with Kota, but he also had another that he liked as well.”
“I know, he told me.”
“He told you?”
“Yes, my feelings for him are returned but… I don’t know. Why me? Why am I the rebounder?”
“You’re not the rebounder Dai-chan, he’s liked you for awhile, he’s just been pulled in by the boy that is Yabu Kota.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course, I am, I love him, I was brought in by him a long time ago and as much as he hurts me, I will always go back to him. And as pathetic as that sounds, I can’t help it.”
“It’s not pathetic Hikaru,” Chinen said while entering the room, “the same with you Dai-chan, it’s not pathetic at all.”
“Were you listening at the door?” Hikaru asked.
“Yes, the only way to find out anything from BEST these days is to eavesdrop on them, you guys never tell us anything and we’re forced to guess and draw our own conclusions, we’re not so innocent anymore that we can’t be talked to about these things you know.”
“Sorry Chi,” Daiki said slowly.
“Hikaru, you can’t go back to Yabu, I know you want to but you can’t he’ll just take advantage of you again and again.”
“I know Chinen, but things don’t work like that,” Hikaru told him, “Things aren’t always black and white, there are some grey areas as well.”
“I know that,” Chinen all of a sudden became defensive “but it’s late, shouldn’t we be heading home?”
“Go ahead Chinen,” Daiki urged, “I’m staying at Hikaru’s tonight so I won’t be going with you, sorry.”
“It’s alright, see you guys tomorrow.”
Chinen left leaving Daiki and Hikaru in the silence. Neither of them know what to say or do. They were in an awkward situation, Yabu Kota messed everything up. It was his fault that they were feeling these emotions, but he was just so good with his words that it was hard to not blame him for everything.
“You’re staying at my house tonight?” Hikaru asked after a few minutes.
“No, I’m actually going to Inoo’s to see if we can straighten things out.”
“I see, well have fun with that,” Hikaru said softly, but he was still a little disappointed.
“I’m sorry,” Daiki caught on to Hikaru’s disappointment.
“It’s alright, go to him, he’s waiting at the door anyways.” Hikaru pointed out and sure enough Inoo was at the window peering at his two friends. Hikaru smiled and waved Inoo in. He entered and the room felt like it used to, when the three of them were comfortable enough around each other that they had to be happy around the others. The smile was constant on their faces even if they were in the worst moods.
“Have a goodnight Hikaru,” Daiki said and gave him a small hug, “and thanks.”
“No, thank-you,” Hikaru said and the two of them left, while shooting a peace sign as the last of their bodies disappeared behind the door.
Hikaru decided that he had sulked enough and that it was time to go home. He begrudgingly got up from the seat that he had flopped himself into after Daiki and Inoo had left. It had been several long minutes, several moments of sulking and relief. He was sad now not because of the events that had happened, but at the events that were about to happen.
Hikaru knew that Daiki and Inoo were going to make up and get together that night and that saddened Hikaru. He, in a way was jealous of their happiness, jealous that even after all of that they could still be together. They could still have each other and know for a fact that the one will not betray the other, but for Hikaru, he will forever be in constant worry.
Hikaru, on the other hand was relieved because Yabu will not use Inoo anymore. He will not have his dose of Inoo and that will make Yabu crave him, instead Yabu will get his just rewards and he will suffer the pain that he had just put his friends through.
Yabu will return to Hikaru and Hikaru will welcome him back with open arms. Even though he was warned to not take him back, there was no way that Hikaru was letting his Yabu go now.
Hikaru walked into his house, shouted his greetings to his family and trudged up to his room, when he got in there though; he was greeted with a surprise. The one person he was running from and to at the same time was lying on his bed fast asleep.
