Chapter 4: Much Better
The morning came all too quickly for the sleeping house. It wasn’t any different than any other early practice day. At 5:00am the house was busy, even though there was no school it meant that there would be longer practices.
Yuto was up at the crack of dawn and ready by the time Yamada’s mom came down to wake him. Since Yamada was such a sleepyhead Yuto offered to shower first to allow Yamada to have a few extra minutes of sleep. Even though Yuto wasn’t a morning person at all, he knew today could NOT be a repeat of yesterday, no matter what.
“Ohayou Yuto,” Yamada said groggily as he made his way to the washroom. Yuto, by this time was sitting and watching television with Yamada’s sisters, both of them had come home very late last night, both times waking Yuto up in the process.
Together, Yuto and Yamada gobbled down their breakfast, said their goodbyes and made their way to work. They said no words to each other since there was very little to say but that changed when they saw Chinen and Ryutaro walking together, holding hands down the not so busy street without a care in the world.
So with a sly glance from Yuto and a return look from Yamada, they both crept up behind the two innocent JUMP members until they were about a foot away and screamed “OHAYOU!” earning them looks from passers by.
Both Chinen and Ryutaro jumped about a foot in the air before turning around and synchronously hitting both of their band mates. “Ohayou,” the said shortly.
“That was mean!” Chinen continued.
“Oh get over it,” Yamada brushed off the glare that he received from Ryutaro. “Let’s have a good practice today, okay?”
“Yeah, as long as Yuto doesn’t screw up like yesterday,” Ryutaro mumbled but it was caught by the three other boys and it earned him an elbow in his side.
“Now, now,” Yamada defended, “Yuto was sick yesterday, it was proven last night, and he had a fever and everything.”
“Really? You two were together?” Chinen raised an eyebrow at this. “When you could have been with~”
Ryutaro quickly shut Chinen up by putting his hand over Chinen’s mouth. “That’s quite enough, Yama-chan was helping Yuto yesterday, remember,” Ryutaro tried.
“Yes I remember, how did he do?” Chinen asked aiming it at Yamada.
“I did fine thank-you very much, I got it eventually, and can you three please stop talking like I’m not here!” Yuto asked a little irritated by the distance between him and his friends. “I’ll do fine today alright. Hopefully. I feel much better today than yesterday.”
“That’s the spirit!” Ryutaro cheered. “I tell myself that all the time when I can’t get a dance step.”
“I’m serious!” Yuto told him as they stepped into the building. In respect of the quiet reception area they stopped talking, there were people sitting there already, this early in the morning just waiting, reading magazines and things. The four of them didn’t start talking until the elevator that they had quietly entered brought them up to the floor they were supposed to practice on. When the doors opened they were greeted by Yabu who quickly said his, “good morning,” to three of them and pulled the fourth one, Yuto, away from the others. He waited until the other three went into the room before speaking.
To be safe, Yabu pulled Yuto a little further down the hall into a secluded area, the Kanjani∞ area, it was only ever used when they were there and it wasn’t often since they lived so far away. Once Yabu was sure that there was no one around, he advanced on Yuto. “I am so sorry for yesterday, I was excited about the date and everything and it’s not often that Hikaru and I can~”
“Stop,” Yuto interrupted him, “I do not need to hear that! I’m fine, it’s all good. Yama-chan’s mother took care of me when she got home, I took my medication a little late, and that’s all. If it happens again, the same effect will happen.”
“But I feel so guilty! I made this promise to you and to Johnny-san and then I forget! It’s not like me at all. I promised and it didn’t even last two weeks!”
“I forgot as well alright, so don’t worry about it. I’ll get everything perfect today; yesterday I wasn’t feeling well alright. Today cannot be a repeat of yesterday.”
“Alright. No mistakes.”
“Done,” Yuto agreed.
They shook on it and went to join the others; they were the last ones to enter. Yuto put his things down and was quickly greeted by Daiki who said nothing but put his arms around the taller boy.
Yuto quickly got the hint and replied, “I’m sorry for worrying you Dai-chan.”
“I’m glad you’re all better,” Daiki said softly. A small cough was heard from Yabu in the background which earned him a look from both Daiki and Yuto, but for different reasons. Takaki and Hikaru, who were on either side of Yabu, saw the looks and laughed out loud earning themselves strange looks from the other members.
Yabu brushed off the look that he received from the two of them and continued changing for practice. Takaki and Hikaru, who were both good friends of the two of them, knew that Daiki had liked Yuto but chose to stay obviously noticeable but silent at the same time.
One by one the members shuffled out of the awkward atmospheric room. Inoo was the first to bolt, he was disturbed by the situation of the other members but he would not say that aloud, it was not their place; it was for him and him alone. He could stay with just observing from afar until it was time, he also knew that, that time, is coming soon. Chinen and Ryutaro followed after him, hand in hand, they were innocent to the things going on around them but they were still aware of the strange atmosphere in the room.
Takaki and Yamada were the next two to leave, Yamada was immersed in a story on how he thought that he had poisoned Yuto the night before, and Takaki was laughing his head off at Yamada’s recollection of the night’s events. Hearing that though, it made Yuto cringe Daiki surge with jealousy and Keito worried.
Daiki left next, having been surging with anger and jealously for Yamada’s story and embarrassment for his own display of affection to Yuto.
“Yuto?” Keito asked, finally moving and making his presence known to the other occupants in the room. Yuto looked up at the other boy and smiled. “Did Yama-chan actually poison you yesterday?” Keito was worried, and as much as he tried to hide it, it could clearly be heard in his voice.
“No, I was sick earlier in the day, but whatever we ate for dinner just made it worse, I guess. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine today” Yuto explained and ended with a smile as to not worry the older boy even more than he already was. Yuto was well aware of Keito’s feelings for him but Yuto couldn’t return them. As much as Yuto tried, his feelings for his best friend could not be overcome.
“Alright. If you need help today, I will help you alright?”
“Okay,” Yuto said politely, he smiled at Keito, “thank-you.”
Keito just smiled happily and quickly left the room. Hikaru watching the situation unfold before him, nudged Yabu and pointed to the couple.
“Dai-chan has competition.”
“Yup, Yuto is just too dense to realize,” Yabu said calmly. Hikaru gave Yabu a quick peck on the cheek before leaving to join the others in the other room. “Yuto?”
“Hmm,” Yuto said in a daze, “Oh sorry I didn’t think that anyone was left in here.”
“I’m not going to leave you alone, especially when you are so down.”
“But I don’t want special treatment,” Yuto protested.
“I’m not trying to give you special treatment; I’m just trying to cheer you up, as a friend. I’m trying to be nice.”
“I know and I’m sorry,” Yuto said quickly. “It’s just that, when I’m like this, I don’t know if people are being nice to me for me or if they are taking pity on me for being this way, you know?” He looked around and noticed that there really was no one left in the room. Yuto in response to finally realizing his surroundings quickly changed into practice clothes and smiled like it was nothing.
“I know, let’s go show them that you can do it. Let’s get the spotlight of the group off you for now okay?” Yabu offered and Yuto nodded. Yabu put on his everything-is-just-dandy face and followed Yuto to the studio.
Luckily everything went smoothly during that practice; Yuto was able to get the dances down pact. Which meant, at least to him that he was doing better. To the others it meant that Yuto’s poor couple of weeks was just a fluke, just a bug that threw him off. To Yabu it meant that Yuto was improving and managing both his energy and his strength to be able get through practice and the illness. This made Yabu proud.
Yuto was getting better, he was winning his battle with himself and it was only a matter of time before the doctor’s say his disease was all gone and he would no longer need the medication that was prescribed to him. He would no longer need to go through those harsh treatments each weekend after all filming was done for his shows. He was able to plan things really well but unfortunately it was all going to catch up with him. This was right under everyone’s nose; the only people who knew of it were Johnny-san, Yabu, Yuto (obviously) Yuto’s parents and now Yamada’s parents. No one else was to know until Yuto was ready to tell them.
Things were just getting more and more complicated, with the revealing of the Chinen and Ryutaro relationship not that they hadn’t all known beforehand but this time it was official. To make it official, unintentionally, they were caught making out by Sanada Yuma and Nozawa Yuki in a closet. The people in JUMP weren’t being so secretive anymore, they no longer cared that they were a bunch of couples just trying to make it in the world and surviving.
Things were going back to normal once again. It wasn’t until three days later when the next bad thing happened.
Author's Note: I'm so sorry that I haven't updated in awhile I feel bad that I left you guys on an almost cliff hanger. I should be able to update as summer vacation mode kicks in.
