Susp's Review: DOTM MECHTECH SIDESWIPE

Jun 25, 2011 08:39

Autobot warrior extraordinaire Sideswipe was criminally underused in ROTF, so hopefully we’ll see more of him in DOTM next week!

Vehicle Mode: Sideswipe is still a Corvette Stingray concept, but he’s opted to ditch his roof and don a spoiler for his return to the big screen. He measures about 13.5 cm(5.3”) long and is greyish beige with a translucent grey windshield, black seats, metallic silver hubcaps, black and metallic silver grille, transparent headlights, translucent red taillights, and a red and white Corvette logo on his hood. His interior features a steering wheel, but no floor boards. Don’t think I’d want to take a spin in this baby.

While I like the convertible look, Sideswipe’s colour scheme is pretty dull compared to his previous toys. Perhaps the eventual redeco will remedy this.

Sideswipe’s MechTech weapon is a dark grey, six-barrelled blaster. Pushing the butt of the blaster deploys a large sword complete with Cybertronix runes on either side. This deadly weapon can be attached to Sideswipe’s back or on either door.

Transformation: Fold back Sideswipe’s hood and unfold his arms and hands. Swing the doors forward, fold down the chest, then snap it into place. Unfold the legs and swing the rear section up.

Robot Mode: Sideswipe stands 14 cm(5.5”), and, like most DOTM Deluxes, is noticeably smaller than his previous toys. His main colours are greyish beige, dark grey, and black with metallic dark grey accents and his head is greyish beige with a metallic dark grey face and translucent blue lightpiping. His trusty swords now bear a much greater resemblance to their cinematic renditions.

Thanks to improved foot design, Sideswipe is pretty stable in spite of the wheels on his feet. You can even fold in his feet and heels so that he can skate into battle! His head, shoulders, and hips are ball-jointed, his upper arms, swords, and thighs rotate, and his elbows, knees, second knees, and ankles are hinged. His blaster/sword can be gripped in either hand or pegged into the ports on his back.

Overall, Susp Sez: Aside from the dull colour scheme, this is a pretty swell toy. Good car mode, easy transformation, stable and poseable robot mode, cool weapon. 4/5
