Chapter 1: “Everyone is someone's dream”
Heaving a sigh, Yunho feels his heart paining every time he thinks of Junsu. It has been three years already but there hasn’t been any news from Junsu yet. In the first year Junsu gone, Yunho sent him an email every three days but Junsu never replied. Everyday he would wait for the postman from the early morning to see if Junsu had sent him any letter. Day by day Yunho was getting tired from waiting in vain. He felt sad and disappointed but moreover he felt worried. He wondered if anything wrong had happened to Junsu. Then he tried to convince himself that Junsu had just moved to a new place so he was busy to set up his new life but he would be back here on their set date as he had promised.
On the 26th August of that year, Yunho went to that basement and waited there all day long. It had been almost nine months since their separation and today he would have a chance to see him again. He was praying all the times for Junsu would suddenly appear in front of him and called him hyung as he always did. How he missed his shining smile. Since the day Junsu went away his life had become too gloomy and he forgot how to smile. He didn’t feel like talking or sharing with anyone else just like before he met Junsu. As soon as he saw the warming sunshine making its way to the basement through those chinks on the ceiling, hot tears felt down on his cheeks. Hurriedly his hands were raised up to wipe away those crystalline liquids. Yunho hated crying. Men shouldn’t cry in their eyes, they cry in their hearts.
He came to a conclusion that perhaps Junsu might be on his way or his flight might have been delayed so he couldn’t make it on time. With those thought Yunho kept waiting there neither budging an inch nor did he remember to sleep. His hands held tightly the other half of their couple key chain. Two days later, he stepped out of the basement, exhausted and hopeless. His heart, mind and soul were numbed. So that’s it. You forgot our date or you might even forget me. Why didn’t you come? Why didn’t you contact me? All I need to know is you are still doing well and that you are healthy and live happily… that’s all I want to know… just a phone call or a letter or an email, whatever… is it that hard? Junsu ah! Kim Junsu! What are you doing now? I miss you. I may go crazy now ‘cuz I miss you like hell… I can’t take it anymore…
Yunho didn’t have much energy left to feel angry or upset. As soon as he entered his house, he collapsed on the living room’s floor, not leaving his parents any spare time to ask for the reason why he had disappeared for the last three days. Yunho was sick for a long time, he had high fever in addition with anorexia. He spent most of his time in bed, lying unconsciously. In his dream, Junsu would appear out of nowhere and smiled at him sweetly and then every time Yunho tried to reach for him, he vanished like the snowflakes melted in his stretched out hands, not leaving a sign of existence. When he came to his sense, he felt like dying. How could he live such a pathetic life like that? Surely Junsu wouldn’t want to see him being this useless. Hence after recovering his strength, Yunho asked for his parents’ permission to move to Seoul. He wanted to enter one of the most famous universities in Seoul as he had already finished his junior education here. Surprisingly, his parents approved right away. To them whatever he wanted to do was all better than lying on the bed.
A month later, Yunho started a new life in a strange place. And on the first day of university, he met Kim Jaejoong. The friendliness in Jaejoong forced him to open his heart again. Yunho still isn’t sure why he feels that comfortable every time Jaejoong is around. Jaejoong isn’t a cheerful person and he doesn’t have that sense of humor like Junsu but he is a great listener. He has those beautiful sincere eyes that make Yunho trusted him from the very first time they met. Yunho can’t imagine how his life in Seoul would be without Jaejoong’s great help. His current shelter, his part-time jobs… were all thanks to Jaejoong’s recommendation. Yunho always feels like he has owed Jaejoong too much yet he hasn’t done a single thing to pay his friend back.
Yunho can’t remember how many time he reminded himself not to bother Jaejoong any more but his heart wouldn’t listen just like this time. Just so he knew that he is standing in front of Jaejoong’s house. The light in his room is still on so he is probably still awake. Picking a small pebble up, Yunho hesitantly throws it all the way to Jaejoong’s glass window. In a jiffy, Jaejoong’s head is stuck out of the lace curtain, he waves when seeing the sight of his best friend. Then in less than no time, Jaejoong storms out of his house. Just like a small bird leaving its nest, Jaejoong flies, I meant he runs towards Yunho. He is wearing a thin black t-shirt and a knee-length short; his hair looks messy but it just makes him look cuter in Yunho’s eyes. His face is shining with those radian flashes reflect from the nearby lampposts. In short, he is plain beautiful.
“Yunnie ah”, Jaejoong silently yells as soon as he reaches the barriers surrounding his front garden. Catching his breathe sharply he asks, “What are you doing here at this time huh?”
Yunho can’t help but giggling at the shorter boy. He gently fixes Jaejoong hair, which looks like little nest now “Were you sleeping?”
“No, I was just reading a book” Jaejoong smiles sheepishly, gesturing Yunho to the bench on the opposite pavement. “Yo, it’s so interesting. I’ll lend you it right after I finish”
“Thanks Jae” Yunho stares thoughtfully. Jaejoong is always like that, whenever he has something good, he will share with Yunho right away. To Yunho, Jaejoong is not only a friend but also his family. Why do you have to be that nice Jae? I don’t deserve it.
“Yunnie ah, what happened?” Finally Jaejoong senses the awkward expression of his friend.
“I’m going back to my hometown tomorrow” he informs, his eyes was looking at anything but Jaejoong.
Jaejoong raises both of his eyebrows. He is silent for a moment then shrieks “Ahh, right!!! I nearly forget that it’s the 26th tomorrow” and once again they both remain silent.
“When are you leaving?” Jaejoong breaks the awkward atmosphere.
“I’ll take the first train at 5 am” Yunho informs.
Jaejoong thinks for a second “Hang on, I’m going with you”. He stands up and when he is about to go back into his house, Yunho pulls his arm over.
“Jae, I’ll be fine. Don’t worry. You don’t have to go with me” Yunho smiles, trying to reassure the shorter boy but looks like it doesn’t work.
“Yah yah yah, Jung Yunho. I know you too well so stop pretending. I’ll do whatever I think that is good for you. I’m not gonna let you go there alone and lock your self in that basement for 2 or 3 days like last year and two years before. This time you are still gonna be like that right?” Jaejoong nearly shouts.
Yunho widens his eyes. He had never seen his friend like this before. He can sense the concern from Jaejoong seems to shift into almost a combination of anger and panic. But above all, what disturb Yunho is his eyes showing the undeniable hurt. Yunho does not understand so he doesn’t know how to respond. Just what is wrong with Jaejoong? Did I say something wrong?
Since Yunho doesn’t answer, Jaejoong presses his lips solemnly, softens his voice “Now wait for me here, I’ll go and get ready”. Before going into his house, Jaejoong takes a deep breath and turns his head to look at Yunho who is still completely dumbfounded, “You are not going any where without me”, he says possessively then disappears after the wooden door.
`
“Junsu ah/// ”
As soon as Junsu turned to the direction where the voice resounded, a too bright flash flared right at his eyes. He frowned with the annoyed expression, looking away to his side. Blinking his eyes many time in order to adjust his vision yet Junsu saw nothing but the black and red flame-alike-dots flying in front of him.
“Hyung, what the hell is that?” now Junsu started to rub his eyes constantly.
Yunho raised his hands up to stop the boy from making the situation worse, “Who told you to look away huh?” asked Yunho as he gently fondled Junsu’s closed eyes.
“But I can’t see anything…” Junsu whined while Yunho continued caressing his face. He smiled sheepishly and lightly curled up as Yunho’s hands slowly ran to his neck.
“Well, there is a reason for that” Yunho took his hands back, smirking at the young boy who is still closing his eyes. “You are blind because of LOVE”, he added in a husky voice.
“What?” Junsu instantly opened his eyes; Yunho was staring at him with that you-are-an-idiot smile.
“Love is just like a flash, it blazes in a twinkle. No matter how well prepared you are, you will certainly become blind” Yunho winked, bringing Junsu’s face closer to his “Or in other words, you are enchanted by my love”
Junsu stared at him for a moment, his jaw was about to drop but then he was giggling instead “Ehhh, hyung ah… where did you steal that from eh?” he teased “Isn’t it too mawkish?”
Yunho pouted, pushing Junsu away “What? Not cute or romantic whatsoever? You are…Humph!” he glanced before turning away.
“Aigoo YES, YES, really sweet indeed” he hugged Yunho from the back, muttering, “Hyung, I love you”
…
He sits up on his bed, painting in fright. Wiping the sweat running along his temple, he buries his face on the blanket torpidly. Sighing. He has this dream again. It was almost too vivid that made Junsu felt like he was watching a live movie. But the shorter boy in there was obviously Junsu, how about the other boy… Junsu is pretty sure that every dream he has is all about this guy…hyung. Hyung? Who is hyung? What is hyung’s name? Junsu couldn’t see his face clearly. Every time he tries to recall what had happened to him or any remained memory, he will have that terrible headache that makes his face twisted in pain.
After walking to a big desk on the left corner of the room, Junsu opens a small blue box, which his adoptive mother gave him three days ago after he kept asking her about his past. There is a piece of his burnt passport in which he still can see parts of his face and his name, a broken watch which reminds him nothing and a key chain. Junsu has thought a lot about this key chain, it’s probably another half of a couple key chains since it has a weird shape of an incomplete circle. In the front, this key chain has some dim vignettes that Junsu can hardly tell what those actually are, along with several random little crystal dots. In the back, it is craved “ YH’s ”. Now, what is YH? Junsu sometimes even doubts that this key chain is his. It’s YH’s so does that mean it belongs to someone named YH? Or is it possible that YH is … hyung? His mind was blank. Only time can answer his questions.
`
As soon as the clock hanging on the wall cuckoos ten times, Yoochun stands up and walks out of his office. Every Monday morning, he will do this “observing project” of his. He has been the director of this corporation for only less than 5 months however he has contributed a lot in proving customer service and increasing sales. At the age of 21, he is too young to lead a big company like this but having 8 years studying abroad in the States and being the chairman’s only son are surely his advantages. Male staffs in this company adore him for his talent and his luck. Female staffs in this company surely love him but for other reasons. In short, who can resist Park Yoochun? However there is another side of this story; everything about him that most of the staffs know is just a … legend. They have never actually seen him before. He is seldom at his office and the meetings are only included senior officials.
Wearing a well-designed shirt with black jeans, Yoochun looks like any normal teenager shopping in the mall. No one will ever suspect him.
“Changmin ah”, he called out loud as he sees a young tall boy rushing out of the lift.
“Yoochun hyung” he greets excitedly.
“Where are you going now?” Yoochun asks while patting the boy’s shoulder.
“Customer service as usual”, he grins, “Want to accompany me?”
Yoochun shrugs “Yeah, sure, why not”
Even though the two boys are just wearing casual clothes, they look completely outstanding in the crowd for the fact that they are so tall and good-looking. As they are walking along the hall, girls give them admiring look. Changmin can hear gasps here and there, his face automatically turns red and he speeds up. On the other hand, Yoochun smirks in satisfaction, he looks around nonchalantly and suddenly he winks at one of the girls nearby. The girl shrieks and gods-know-what-happen-after-that. Changmin does not dare look back while Yoochun mumbles, “Garhh, my popularity is not a joke”
“Yoochun hyung, this is the reason why I don’t want to hang out with you” Changmin complains, shaking his head.
“Yah, you are so mean to me” Yoochun glances, “Anyway, this time what is that customer service about?”
“Well, the staffs of our “Diva Store” called me, they said someone kept asking them about a key chain or something…” he explains then points at the jewelry shop on the right corner “There, that’s the shop I’m talking about”
Following Changmin’s gesture, Yoochun sees a young guy wearing a white hoodie. He has eyebrow-length bangs. He looks so cute with the expression of a lost puppy. The staffs standing in front of him look perplexed like they have got into a big trouble.
Is that Kim Junsu…? The corners of his lips lifting upwards almost imperceptibly, Yoochun turns to Changmin, “Yah, don’t worry, I’ll handle this for you” and then he snatches Changmin’s documents, leaving the taller boy no time to decline, “I’ll repay you later for this favor”.
“What do you want to do hyung?” Changmin still doesn’t comprehend a word Yoochun said.
“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you later” said Yoochun as he fixes his clothes and walks towards the jewelry shop, followed by Changmin.
“Hello, we come from the customer service team”, Yoochun introduces after he bows politely at them.
“Ah, thanks Gods you are here now” one of the staffs said in relief “this young man wants to ask something about this key chain but unfortunately we know nothing about it” he passes Yoochun the key chain and continues “it is craved in the key chain that it was made by our company but recently we don’t have any design like this”.
God is standing on my side this time. “Oh I see, I think I can help this customer. You can go back to your work now” Yoochun said to the staffs then he turns to Junsu “Sir, do you want to have a sit and we’ll figure out what we can do for you”
They are now sitting on the sofa along the corridor. “So what do you want to know about this key chain?” Yoochun asks as he sips his latte.
“Sorry for bothering but is there any possibility that I can find out where this key chain was bought and who has bought it?”
“Uhm, I remember this key chain was one of our projects three years ago”, Yoochun informs.
“Which project is that hyung?” Changmin questions. He is also a staff of this company, how could he know nothing about this.
“Oh, It wasn’t a successful project so… maybe not so many people know” Yoochun scratches his head lightly “to tell the truth, it was my idea in the first place. I thought of making couple key chains that were suitable for young teenager couples. Heart, circle and triangle shape were available for customers to choose. Then they got to crave whatever they want in the back and front. So basically they were customer self-designed. And in the front, those are real diamond if you did not notice so those key chains were quite expensive” Yoochun pauses waiting for more questions.
“What is it craved in the front? I can’t tell” Junsu asks, his face looks more mysterious than ever.
Yoochun studies the key chain carefully “I’m not sure since it is supposed to joint with the other half to fulfill a sentence.” YH’s? YooHee? YoenHwa? So he already has a girlfriend?
“Then how do we know where this came from hyung?” Changmin rushes since Yoochun hasn’t answered the main question yet.
“Ah, that. Luckily, this project was only tested in three areas: Seoul, Gwangju-Jeonrado and Busan. I think there should be records of what customers had ordered”, Yoochun pointed out confidently.
“Can you please search for it? It’s really important to me” Junsu requests. This is his only hope.
“Sure, how do I contact you?” Yoochun asks while Changmin stares at him doubtfully, trying to read his mind.
“Oh, I am Kim Junsu. This is my phone number” Junsu bows down to write his number in a piece of paper. “What should I call you?” he asks, eyes shifting from Yoochun to Changmin then back to Yoochun.
“Call me…” Yoochun pauses. If he tells Junsu his real name then Junsu will probably know that he is the one that sponsors his debut and he will miss all the fun with this cute guy. No way!!! “Call me Micky” he smirks craftily.
Changmin chokes as soon as he hears Yoochun lies. No, actually Yoochun didn’t lie. Micky is his English name when he was in the States but he only uses it in Korea when he wants to flirt with girls. “I’m Shim Changmin”. Yoochun is patting his back with his too-nice-to-be-real smile.
“Thanks a lot for helping me” Junsu bows as he stands up, “It means so much to me seriously”. He gives the two boys a grateful smile that is almost too sweet.
Noticing the two little dimples on the corner of Junsu’s lips when he smiles, that is when Yoochun realizes that his heart has just skipped a beat.
