As part of the literature review of Doom (of which more will almost certainly be posted at a later point), I found it necessary to print out a large BibTeX file containing abstract fields. Which is easy enough, except that I also wanted to print the abstract fields, and I rather wanted it to look like a bibliography rather than a BibTeX file.

Bluetooth is meant to Just Work on Windows XP SP2.  But for me, and apparently a number of other people on the interwebs, it doesn't.  It took me a Long Time to fix, even with the help of Google, so I shall make a note of the solution here ( Read more... )

If you use Matlab on both windows and *nix, it can be annoying keeping your startup.m files synchronised.  Yes, ideally, you would have one that was sourced by both, but unless your startup directory in Windows happens to be the same as ~ in Unix, that's not possible.  Also, if you need to refer to a path which is fundamentally different on the two ( Read more... )

Second in an occasional series of OpenOffice hacks.

I have a powerpoint presentation containing a lot of .emf images (from matlab).  Now, I expect to be using powerpoint to present this, but wanted a working openoffice version as a backup in case I need to present if off my laptop, which runs Linux.

I like OpenOffice.  It's nice.  But sometimes it crashes and the recovery doesn't recover your files.  This happened to me today.  And yes I was saving regularly - or so I thought.  WARNING: the save button in the design views of the database bit doesn't save your file.  I don't really know what it does do, but not that.
