[Gem is sitting outside, holding an umbrella over herself as shade. She is attempting to get used to the sun; she still finds it strange, but it seems here to stay so she will adapt.

Looking at the journal, she purses her lips, and finally speaks]Many people seem curious or confused as to what I am. I thought perhaps I should explain to all; I am ( Read more... )

A computer program, huh? Hmmm... I can't say I've encountered a program outside of a computer.

[Now that you've caught Selphie interest, she's curious.]

[Gem quirks an eyebrow]

Have you met a Program inside of a computer? Or do you mean you have simply used them?

[No judgement, just curious in turn]

Whoops! Sorry about the mixup there. I meant that I've used them before.

No need to apologize. I only know of two Users who actually have visited our world.

My name is Gem.

[That's...interesting. They've never talked until now and her description of herself just caught his attention]

I've never seen a program capable of thought like you are demonstrating. You look almost human as well, no one would think you were bits of data. Is it common for programs to leave the system in your world?

Most have not. Our Creator kept us a secret from the outside world--and he created us in his own image.

[At his other question, she takes a moment to write more. There is a welling up of emotion in her, and she must keep herself in check not to write something out of bitterness.]

No, it is not. Besides the Program who is here, as well, I know of no other Programs that have left.

I see. Then it is only this system your creator has made that is unique?

[He looks at the writing. He can't really tell the tone from it, but it left him with an impression that-]

I take it this is your first time outside the system.

No. Before he created The Grid, he had seen another system. There are possibly thousands...each computer has one.

However, I do not have full knowledge of these things. I am simply guessing.

[Flynn never told her anything.]

It is, yes.

[ normally? buffy would have totally risen to that dig. but she just spent the last week hunting and battling one of her closest friends in luceti as he slipped over to the vamp side. she hasn't the inclination or the energy to get into a cat fight.

but if you're game for it? as she passes where gem sits outside under her umbrella, she nods. tired-looking and fightless. ]

[Gem quirks an eyebrow as Buffy passes. She isn't one who normally speaks to women...or anyone who passes really. Especially someone she had a hard conversation with early on. But still, she speaks, once.]

Trouble?

...There always is.

[ she slows -- what jack had to say about gem sticks in her mind and she at least doesn't have to work hard to be standoffish. the horror of the last week does that for her. ]

Truly?

From what I've seen, this place is much more peaceful than where I hail from.

[Out of all things, that was something she liked about this place.]

I'm glad you think so. Are you a User that enjoys computer systems?

Mm. Very much so. We've made a lot of progress in the past decade or so especially, but we aren't to this level of AI yet.

I don't think I'd call myself Artificial Intelligence. The other Program here, Tron, was created in the 1980s.

[She smirks]

Though some Programs are more base; we can't all think for ourselves.
