[Gem is sitting outside, holding an umbrella over herself as shade. She is attempting to get used to the sun; she still finds it strange, but it seems here to stay so she will adapt.
Looking at the journal, she purses her lips, and finally speaks]
Many people seem curious or confused as to what I am. I thought perhaps I should explain to all; I am tired of fielding all inquiries.
[Well, Gem can be persuasive, but getting asked every time she meets a new person can be frustrating.]
I am a Program. I exist within a computer system; whether you realize it or not, all sytems contain programs. We all form different functions. I fulfill a support need, but others are security systems, system administrators, language translators.
[She looks over to the side, momentarily distracted by a bird, but continues to speak.]
We call those who exist outside the system, Users. They are the ones who have the capability to make us, to pull us into being; the ones who use us. It is why I have found myself referring to all you non-Programs as Users, regardless.
It is not a slight, simply the terminology of my world.
[That was a dig at you, Buffy.]
If you have any questions, I'd be more than pleased to answer them now.
