[Continued from here.]

Sam just blinked as she rattled off a rant full of more invective than he'd really thought possible without using a single curse word; but really, he had to keep reminding himself, this was Cordelia, and he was convinced that as far as knowing her went, he ought to get used to surprises. Especially eloquently vicious ones ( Read more... )

Sam quirked an eyebrow. "Oh for the days when I could have conscienced kicking one of the clinic patients out of their room... actually I'm kidding, I don't think I ever had days like that." He kept backing toward the stairs, his eyes glimmering with anticipation and enjoyment. He wasn't sure what to say; on the one hand, his gentlemanly sensibilities were severely offended by the idea of taking any girl, much less Cordelia, to a place as possibly sketchy as a storage room. On the other hand, he was pretty sure that once they were alone, things as trivial as scenery wouldn't even make it onto his radar.

Cordelia laughed a little at that. She couldn't picture Sam kicking anyone from anywhere; he was just too darned Good. Cordelia, on the other hand, would have had no qualms whatsoever about booting little old Mr. MacDoodle out of a nice warm bed he wasn't ever going to put to good use anyway. Clawing her way to the top of Sunnydale High hadn't been all sunshine and daisies and love-ins, after all.

"I don't believe you'd even had days where you thought about doing stuff like that," she said with just the tiniest hint of a smirk, giving his hand a squeeze.

"Hey, you never know," he protested with a mock serious expression. "I could be vicious. Come on, don't you think I have it in me? Evil politician and all." Really though, he wasn't feeling so much vicious as excited and a little mushy. His hand behind him found the railing and he paused to turn and at least sort of look where he was going; because really, among the suave and sexy things a guy could do to impress a girl, falling down the stairs wasn't on the top of the list. Actually, Sam was pretty sure it wasn't even ON the list.

He took the stairs quick, hopping off the last two and turning to face her again, backing toward the door. When his back hit it he fumbled for the knob, his other hand reaching for hers to pull her in after him.

Cordelia was actually pretty impressed by his going-backwards-down-the-stairs navigating skills, and she would have told him so had he not found the door to the storage room. Affording a last minute look over her shoulder at the stairwell -- just in case -- she allowed herself to be tugged inside. Not bothering to turn around, she kicked the door shut.

Brow arching, she disentangled her fingers from Sam's and skirted them up along the inside of his arm, resting at the crook of his elbow.

"Hi," she said coyly, eyes sparkling. "What's an Evil Politician such as yourself doing in a place like this?"

A grin spread across his face but pulled up last-minute into a sly little smirk. "Waiting to ensnare unsuspecting young ladies like yourself." Taking another step back, he found a table at his back and leaned back on it, pulling her close against him. A beat while he looked at her, his breath hitching a little in his chest, and then he added, "I think this is the part where I offer you an internship, right?"

Cordelia supressed the very strong urge to laugh and settled against him. Her fingers slid up the rest of his arm, gliding across the slope of his shoulder to cup the nape of his neck. "I'm a hard sell," she said slowly, tossing her hair a bit because, well, guys totally had hang-ups about girls and their fantastic slow-motion hair-tossing skills. Cordelia thought it was because of all those Charlie's Angels re-runs and 90210 marathons. Brushing her nose against his, she added, "But if you give me an offer I can't refuse, well..." Turned out that Cordelia had a sly little smirk of her own.

Sam did like the hair toss thing, but he liked even better how close she was, how pressed up against him like this it wasn't the whole picture of her that dazzled him, but the little things; the sparkle in her eyes, the little pucker at the corner of her mouth, how comfortably her waist fit between his hands. It was an amazing feeling, and not one he wanted to stop experiencing anytime soon. "It's a tough job," he said, tilting his head into her hand. "Long hours, late nights. Only for a girl of impeccable taste and intelligence like yourself. Your start date won't be for another few weeks though, as the office is under forced renovations." He let out a little sigh as her fingernails brushed the back of his neck, shivering slightly against her.

"Another few weeks, hmmm?" she said, liking very much the way his chest was solid and warm against her. She especially liked it when she felt him shiver, and Cordelia simply had to place her free hand on the center of his chest, smiling softly as she felt it rise and fall with every inhalation and exhalation. Inclining her head just so, her lips moved so very slowly against his as she continued, "Fortunately, I don't mind getting in a bit of experience before the position officially begins."

Sam's breath did a little hitch-jump in his chest, and he forced himself not to lean in the millimeter it would take for him to be kissing her again. "Willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. I like that. You're definitely among the top candidates for the job, Miss Chase." His hands slid deftly under the hem of her shirt and settled against the small of her back, his thumb brushing the dip at the base of her spine. "And I can promise you'll be excellently well compensated. Commensurate with your experience, of course." He was sure she could feel his heart racing in his chest.

A sharp, unexpected heat raced up and down her spine, starting at the spot where his thumb brushed against her skin. Her lips parted slightly, humming as the sensation began to fade, though the ghost of warmth remained there.

"Of course," she whispered. Lightly she ran her fingers up his chest, along the line of his throat, and over his jaw. "I would totally expect nothing less from a man such as yourself."

His eyes drifted shut of their own accord and he tilted his head to stretch his neck for more of her touch. His composure was dissolving pretty quickly, and he was battling his own body to keep his breath and his voice even. "Excellent, then we're on the same page," he breathed, his smile leaping forward despite his efforts to stay serious. "You can start immediately. Unless you have something else scheduled for right now, of course. Wouldn't want to mess up your schedule."

Pretending to think for a moment, her lips parted slightly on a soft exhalation. Her thumb tracing a small circle just above his jaw-line, she finally said, "It's only penciled-in. I can cancel."

Lips twitching, wanting desperately to laugh or kiss him breathless or both, she added, "Things seem infinitely, like, more interesting here. You can mess up my schedule any time."

OMG, how hard was this tag? *squeezes blood out of stone* Sorry took so long, for some reason I am just having a hard time getting in her head lately. :/

"Glad to hear it," Sam said, grinning, one hand finding the back of her head and bringing her face so close to his that their lips were practically touching. "Cause I think I'm going to be doing it a lot from now on. I also think this has just become one of those times when talking is really overrated," he murmured, and kissed her hard.

[hehe it's okay! ♥!]

One of the things Cordelia liked best about Sam was that he totally got her and said things she was pretty much thinking herself when she was thinking them. As much fun as she was having bantering with him, she knew she'd have even more fun if they could just shut up for a minute. So, when Sam announced that this was now one of those times when talking was overrated, Cordelia was overjoyed.

"Mmmhmm," she murmured, the sound getting swallowed up by his mouth as he kissed her hard enough to take most of her breath away. There went her own plans for kissing him breathless.

The fingers she had placed on the back of his neck flexed, then dug into his skin as she hauled herself closer. Instinctively a knee lifted and she hooked her heel against the back of his calf, never pulling back all the while.

Breathing was kind of overrated right now, too.

"God, Cordelia," he said against her mouth, the words coming out more like a quiet gasp than like just normal words. His fingers curled lightly against her skin as he kissed her again, sliding almost tentatively up her back. With her foot moving up his leg like that he wanted to pick her up and shove her against the wall, do something to feel more of her against him. But his body had switched to autopilot, and all he could do was kiss her. Lucky for him that didn't seem to be getting old anytime soon.

She's always liked the way he says her name, but this is hands-down her favorite way -- low and soft and nothing more than a puff of breath and a slow move of lips against hers. "Sam," she whispered back, an almost lethargic stunt of a shudder starting at the base of her spine and spreading out as his fingers slid up her skin. If she hadn't been preoccupied with the taste of his mouth and the way he fit against her, she might have said more.
