It was Sunday night and Dick was hanging out in his room before he had to go do radio. He had the TV on and Angel the cat omg sitting in his lap. He was kind of worried about taking care of the cat when Annette first asked him to do it but it really was easier than it looked. He really hadn't had much experience with pets. He didn't really have his dog for too long. Not that he ever wanted to think about that, ever...
By sheer coincidence Beaver called Dick at that very moment.
"Your tux came in today." said Beaver as soon as Dick picked up the phone.
"Tux for what?" asked Dick. He knew very well what it was for. He just liked being annoying.
"Dad's wedding! God, you are so stupid sometimes." he said. "It's in a week! You did tell the school you'd be leaving for that weekend, right?"
Dick shrugged even though Beaver couldn't see it. "I'll get around to it."
"Are you going to stay for a little while?" asked Beaver.
"Just until Saturday, Beav." said Dick. And knowing that this would just piss his brother off he quickly added "I've got to go to these summer workshops. Can't miss them."
"Oh." Beaver sighed heavily in disappointment but Dick knew that it was just for show. Angel was jealous that Dick's attention wasn't fully on her and meowed loudly to get his attention.
"What the hell was that?" asked Beaver. "Are you meowing at me?"
"Psh you wish, pervert." said Dick. "I'm watching over my girlfriend's cat for the week."
"You? Take care of a cat?" Beaver laughed. "You can't even take care of yourself."
"Hey! The cat's fine. I think she likes me." he says. "I took care of-"
Dick stopped talking abruptly. He held his breath and waited to see what Beaver would say. He hoped he'd just let it go. Please, please let it go...
Beaver was silent for a few moments. "Go on, Dick. Finish your sentence."
It wasn't often that Dick was at a loss for words but he was now. He pushed Angel off his lap and sat up in his bed. "Um..."
"You took care of Sally. Is that what you were going to say?" asked Beaver, his voice getting colder with every word. "Well?"
Dick ran a hair through his hair nervously. He hated when Beaver was like this. Beav didn't really lose his temper with Dick often but when he did it was horrible. "I wasn't-"
"You obviously didn't take care of it very well since it ran away from you." Beaver said calmly. Dick knew very well that his dog didn't run away and Beaver knew that. Dick wasn't exactly sure what happened to Sally but he knew that it wasn't because he didn't take care of her.
"Yeah. Maybe...maybe you're right." Dick mumbled. He just wanted to stop talking about it. Why did he even bring it up? Dick wasn't sure why he didn't fight back. He knew, knew that his brother would never do anything to hurt him. But he didn't dare argue with Beaver when he was like this. It was best to just make him happy as soon as possible.
"Listen Beav, I got to go." said Dick quickly. "I'm tired."
"Oh, okay then." said Beaver, sounding as happy as he was at the beginning of the conversation. "Call me tomorrow."
"Yeah, um, okay." replied Dick. Like he wanted to do that.
"Don't forget to tell the school that you're leaving for the weekend." added Beaver.
"I won't." says Dick, itching to get off the phone quickly. "See ya, dude."
"Bye, Dick."
Dick clicked the phone shut and hooked it up to the charger. Angel jumped up on his bed again and curled up in Dick's lap. Dick turned up the volume on the TV and tried to not think about the phone call.
[Hrm...let's say this is establishy. Unless you've got some need to talk to Dick]
