This is what happens when you get into a series, that everyone has already gotten into and are somewhat bored with it…
Or is it just me, which if the plot is interesting and there seems to be a lot of foreshadowing, might be the lit student in me that it suggests that are so many things, that can be discussed and theories to think up?
This is in relation to SnK, Shingeki no Kyojin or Attack on Titan
These aren't really theories, they're more just my ramblings
One of the ideas I was tossing over was the origin of the Titans and the ideas of the walls. It is assumed that humanity has been on the brink of extinction because Titans had killed them off and so as a result certain walls have been created.
However we're not told that there is a possibility of other human settlements*. Even though it keeps expressing, the fact that the remains of humanity live within the walls like caged animals…
Later we find that the walls itself have Titans imprisoned within them, which brings to realisation that throughout this time, humanity has been protected by titans from titans. Titans rely on sunlight^ to move (although in recent chapters, this is in dispute as by the midnight attack where Titans went crazy at the Castle Uruh) and so by imprisoning them in walls, humans can take advantage of their thick metal capabilities to maintain the walls. So if the walls come down, does it mean the titans stuck between them can escape...?
The Colossal Titan and Armoured Titan were told to wipe out the humans from Wall Maria. Apart from the initial thinking, but they're Titan shifters, so they're technically still human, so why would they do such a thing, especially when it resulted into loss of life...?
The central theme to this series is identity and one's humanity. What it means to be human and can we still be considered human under such circumstances? Especially when humanity is on the brink of extinction. And there's also the titan shifters. Where brings to question of who is human and who not human?
Some have no qualms about hating their humanity or lack of humanity...i.e Annie. However for Annie, it's a method of survival, as everyone would have hated her if they had known of the truth and she has given up on humanity. It could be suggested that by being a titan shifter, that one gives up their humanity in exchange to be able to shift into a titan or the realisation that humanity is going to hate you for.** Eren is a special case obviously as he hates all titans with a passion, especially for the death of his mother and he resents that they're living like animals, primed for slaughter. He sees his power as a way to destroy all the titans, once and for all, despite the overwhelming odds.
Reiner and Bertholdt on the other hand have no regrets. They were told to destroy the humans within Wall Maria and that was it, despite being humans being themselves. Humans are being turned into titans and there's not much information to why they're being turned into titans. Could be that they make perfect soldiers and that in such a cruel world, that is the only way to survive, by becoming a titan yourself. I'm tossing over the idea that children or teenagers are likely to be successful at turning into titans because of their ages and so that their titan self might grow along their human counterpart. Although it might depend on the capabilities of the person as Colossal one is 50+ (Connie's realisation, when the titan at his parent's place, went Welcome back, so they're capable of speech)%
And there's the horrible realisation that titans are as 'human' as humans themselves, when we're led to believe that titans were nothing but mindless monsters, which ate humans for their own amusement and not because they were hungry. Kept getting BFG vibes here, although those giants ate humans because that was their source of food and quite tasty. Apparently. Urgh If we would remove the the fact that titans ate humans, (of course not forgetting that humans do indeed have consumed humans at one point in history and to an extent, still do unfortunately), they could be viewed as humans also. Considering they're capable of speech. Which brings back to the idea, of what means to be human...? The power of speech? Superior thinking capabilities? Titans could be considered to be humans, if we were stripped to our basic selves, without any rational thought but just basic instincts to survive. Eat. Hunt. Rest.
*In Annie's flashback, her father tells her to please come back safety. Which suggests that there are possible human settlements that no one knows about it.
^ Titans require light, any source of light and so it doesn't matter whether it is sunlight or moonlight
% Unlike the other titans, Connie's one was swollen and had skinny arms, rending it unable to move...that not all titan shifters are perfect or that it might be that teenagers are more likely to be successful at turning into titans...
** Upon realising Eren can change into a Titan, everyone is scared and thinks he's a monster and their first thought is, to kill him when he's down. Everyone is afraid of what they don't understand. And people are quick to fear and first instinct is to remove the object that gives rise to said fear
Feel free to offer any thoughts or things. :D
