comic books suck, man.
i stopped into my old comic book store today. not really to buy anything, just to browse around. i wanted to see what books were still around from the period several years ago when i was collecting them. i figured if something jumped out at me, i might pick it up. maybe i'd check out the posters and whatnot.
what i saw really threw me off. not only has the selection of comics changed, it's changed a lot. marvel comics, the home of spider-man, the fantastic four, and the x-men, has started putting out all kinds of books that just look the same. all new characters and costumes, but all ultra-slick and modern. it's different to me, and it's weird. it's like there was a baby boom in the world of comics, and all these new characters were created all of a sudden. i felt like a senior citizen complaining about 'kids these days' when saw all these new books.
why can't there just be like, 3 or 4 superheroes? where do there have to be literally hundreds and thousands of super-powered beings in an equal number of titles? it's really unnecessary. it's simply overkill. i understand that they have to make money and all, but every now and then, you just have to freaking clean house. especially when some of these characters are 40+ years old.
like captain america. frankly, i'm glad they killed him off. of course, there's no way he'll stay dead - these are comic books, after all - but it's nice to get some amount of mortality and finality mixed in with these characters.
then again, i could take a step back and realize that i'm getting all bent out of shape over something that's completely trivial. it's not like comics are really that important. but i guess it's the little things in life, huh?
oh, and in case anyone is wondering, spider-man is wearing the black suit again. cause that has nothing to do with the release of the movie, which features a black suit. lame.
