Thing one: We have our
first living Medal of Honor recipient since Vietnam, w00t! Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, 173rd Airborne, will be awarded the nation's highest valor award for his actions during a fierce firefight Oct. 25, 2007, in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.
According to the White House announcement, when an insurgent force ambush split Giunta’s squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a comrade back to cover. Later, while engaging the enemy and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other, and provided medical aid to his wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security.
His courage and leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon’s ability defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American paratrooper from enemy hands, according to the White House.
If I didn't love President Obama already, this sealed the deal. (Now if he would just get rid of DADT...)

Thing two: Sort of barely related (only because in my head I like to think that Jack O'Neill is a MoH recipient...)
my recap for 7x21 "Lost City, Pt. 1" is up over at
redial_the_gate. Warning: Crack ahead! I had every intention of writing a normal recap when I sat down to do this one, but um, that's not what came out. :S
Go read (if you dare) and join the discussion!

Thing three: Found out a big downside to my new contract gig... the employer pays their invoices every 60 days. So if I file an invoice on Oct. 1 I won't get a check until Dec. 1. Ugh. Good thing I have been conservative with my severance and unemployment! I've also spent the day comparing health insurance plans and trying to figure out how to be a 1099 contractor. Any US flisters with 1099 experience have any pointers?
